POSITION SUMMARYJewett Automation is seeking a highly motivated Senior Mechanical Engineer to lead the design, development, and implementation of custom automation solutions. The ideal candidate brings 10+ years of hands-on experience designing industrial automation systems, a strong grasp of SolidWorks, and the ability to collaborate across disciplines. This position may be performed remotely with occasional travel to our Richmond VA, facility as needed for design reviews, machine debug, or customer interaction.PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Lead and collaborate with project team members (internal and external) to strategically execute the project scope.
Utilize SolidWorks software to create CAD models for mechanical components and assemblies per Jewett Automation’s design standards.
Research and specify commercially off-the-shelf components for use in automation system designs
Participate in design reviews and present solutions to internal teams and customers.
Assist Sales and Applications departments to accurately estimate the material costs and labor for proposed equipment.
Conduct tolerance analyses, material selection, and stress/load evaluations (FEA) to ensure functionality and durability.
Serve as the primary mechanical engineering lead for assigned projects, from concept through FAT (Factory Acceptance Testing).
Collaborate with Electrical and Controls Engineers to ensure machine designs meet requirements.
Provide technical guidance during peer reviews and support knowledge sharing across all engineering teams.
Create documentation for piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) for projects.
Generate and maintain project documentation, including design calculations, risk assessments, and revision histories.
Ensure designs meet performance requirements, safety standards, and customer specifications.
Perform all assigned tasks within a predefined amount of time, while following quality limits and safety practices.
Participate in scheduled departmental and project meetings.
Collaborate with colleagues to create cohesive and effective products.
Identify and suggest productivity and quality improvements to supervisors and engineers.
REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (BSME) or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 10 years of experience in mechanical design for automation systems.
Strong command of SolidWorks 3D CAD software or equivalent.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
Strong understanding of GD&T, manufacturing methods, and mechanical design principles.
Familiarity with manufacturing methods for mechanical components and fabrications.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, cross-functional environment.
Familiarity with 6-axis robotics, material handling, conveyors, and end-of-line packaging.
Hands-on approach with strong troubleshooting and mechanical assembly skills.
Experience with risk assessments and compliance with safety standards.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Experience with 3D printing manufacturing methods.
Available to travel occasionally as needed for project support.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams)

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to lift at least 50-75 lbs.
Ability to stand and/or sit a minimum of four hours at a time.
Ability to use hands and arms to finger, handle, reach, and feel.
Ability to work on a computer as needed.
Ability to maneuver around a shop environment and work on complex machines, including but not limited to, climbing and working from ladders and lifts.
Ability to travel approximately one week at a time throughout the year.
Willingness to wear PPE for the work environment.
