What to Expect Collaborate with Tooling Design, Simulation Engineers, Process Engineering, to manufacture the world's most complex and demanding High Pressure Die Casting tooling, enabling Tesla to build the most innovative and cost-effective electric vehicles.
What You'll Do Develop the CAD design and improvements of die cast tooling, including split lines, slides, ejection, vent and cooling system (e.g. waterlines in tool steel as well as internal and external plumbing)
Design custom dies, fixtures, jigs, tools, etc. as needed, and provide models/drawings for fabrication
Provide feedback to Tooling Design and Casting Engineers to achieve the right balance between tooling performance and manufacturability from a tooling perspective
Evaluate failures and provide technical solutions to improve quality and / or OEE in the specified area
Capture feedback from Casting Process Engineers into new and replacement dies
Innovate new ideas to push the envelope of performance (cycle time, yield, uptime) and minimize risk
Design and implement die designs and modifications to continuously improve die performance
Assist in the development of tooling design and fabrication schedules, then execute accordingly
Provide technical oversight of tooling suppliers
Manage multiple projects simultaneously, including outsourced work and vendors
What You'll Bring Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
Minimum of 5 years of relevant mechanical design experience
Experience with aluminum HPDC tooling, but other relevant tooling or mechanical design experience can be considered
Strong to expert level 3D CAD skills, including advanced surfacing and large assemblies
CATIA V5+ fluency preferred. If no CATIA experience, must be able to learn and adopt it quickly as it will be the design package used
Experience designing in 2D (AutoCAD) and/or 3D (Catia) environments
Experience working in a Tool Shop producing new Casting dies, performing engineering changes and die repair work
Demonstrated project management abilities
