Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced Electrical Distribution Engineer to design, manage, and oversee electric distribution line projects that deliver safe, reliable, and high-quality service to our customers. This role involves investigating, surveying, designing, and staking electric distribution lines in compliance with RUS, state, local, and company guidelines. The successful candidate will prepare staking sheets, work orders, and material lists; develop cost estimates; secure easements and rights-of-way; and create construction contracts for new and existing distribution lines. You will also manage and maintain automated mapping and facilities management systems while ensuring each project is tailored to the unique locality, weather conditions, and operational requirements. The ideal candidate will combine strong technical expertise with proven project management skills, overseeing multiple projects with varying scopes and timelines while meeting deadlines and budgetary goals. You will work closely with customers, vendors, and team members, requiring excellent communication, conflict management, and active listening abilities. This position also demands proficiency with GPS equipment, GIS mapping systems, staking programs, and Microsoft Office applications. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology and 8+ years of experience —preferably in the utility or industrial power fields—are required, along with a solid understanding of electrical theory and power engineering principles. Travel of 25–35% within Indiana and occasional trips to surrounding states is expected. Job Duties: The successful candidate will ensure that our customers’ electric systems provide the highest possible quality and reliability of service through effective design and project management. Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Investigating, surveying, designing, and staking electric distribution lines in accordance with construction specifications. Overseeing the construction or design of assigned distribution line projects. Preparing staking sheets, work orders, and other required materials accurately and completely. Performing and directing staking activities within existing RUS, state, local, and Company guidelines. Preparing cost estimates for projects. Creating contracts for new and existing distribution lines. Performing and directing maintenance of automated mapping and facilities management systems. Obtaining easements and rights-of-way when required. Designing power lines to accommodate local conditions, weather, activity, and operational needs. Managing construction projects from start to finish. Required Qualifications: Proficiency in using GPS equipment. Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a background check, driver’s history review, and drug/alcohol screening. Strong organizational and communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with customers. Willingness to travel 25–35% of the time, including occasional overnight trips (primarily in Indiana, with some travel to surrounding states). Project Management: Ability to develop and implement effective plans to achieve established goals; allocate resources efficiently; define processes; track progress; and make necessary adjustments. Capable of managing multiple projects with varying scopes and timelines. Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for phone, in-person, and email correspondence. Able to write formal reports and maintain a professional, respectful tone. Proficient in both verbal and nonverbal communication. Conflict Management: Ability to mediate issues between coworkers, clients, vendors, and other stakeholders. Active Listening: Skilled at understanding and addressing the ideas and concerns of colleagues and clients through attentive listening, clarifying questions, and attention to nonverbal cues. Reliability: Consistently meets deadlines, completes assigned tasks, and achieves project milestones to earn the trust of clients and colleagues. Strong customer service orientation, professionalism, and positive attitude. Flexibility to work effectively in a changing environment. Solid knowledge of mathematics and statistics, with the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Familiarity with GIS mapping systems, staking programs, and the SEDC consumer information system. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other PC-based software applications. Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Electrical Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited university or technical school. 8+ years of related experience. Experience in utility or industrial power systems preferred. Knowledge of electrical theory; completion of courses in power engineering is preferred.
