As a Software Engineering Intern focused on security, you’ll collaborate with teammates to solve real problems and ship innovative software. You’ll help raise the security bar by designing, building, and testing secure and maintainable code, adopting Microsoft’s Security Development Lifecycle (SDL) practices—including secure coding, identity/authN‑authZ, compliance tooling, and threat modeling—as part of how you build. You’ll learn new tools and frameworks quickly, apply customer obsession, and look for opportunities to improve reliability, performance, and security at scale.

Responsibilities
Applies engineering principles and secure coding standards to solve complex problems through sound and creative engineering.
Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature.
Keeps abreast of security technologies and emerging security best practices to apply continuous secure improvements to systems of focus.
Quickly learns new engineering methods and incorporates them into work processes.
Seeks feedback and applies internal or industry best practices to improve technical solutions.
Demonstrates skill in time management and completing software projects in a cooperative team environment.
Understands and applies Microsoft’s security policies and best practices to ensure systems meet our security and trust commitments to our customers.
Reviews current security developments and proactively seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, security, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Enrolled in a full time bachelor's or master’s program in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field during the academic term immediately before the internship.
Must have at least 1 semester/term remaining following the completion of the internship.
One year of programming experience in an object-oriented language.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to demonstrate an understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures and algorithms.
Demonstrated interest in security (e.g., secure coding, identity/authN‑authZ, compliance tooling, threat modeling, or participation in security clubs/research/hackathons).
Course, project, or internship exposure to one or more of:
Back‑end/services: C#/.NET, Java/Kotlin, Go; API design; containers/Kubernetes; multithreaded programming.
Frontend: TypeScript/JavaScript, React, modern UI engineering.
Systems & platform: C/C++/Rust, OS concepts, networking (DNS/DHCP), firmware/driver fundamentals, Windows/Linux, security debugging/tooling.
The base pay range for this internship is USD $5610.00 - $11010.00 per month. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $7270.00 - $12030.00 per month.
