While many positions at Coinbase are designed for remote work, this role requires in-person participation throughout the year. We host multiple team and company-wide offsites annually to promote collaboration and connection, and attendance is both expected and supported.
About the Team:
The Financial Hub (FinHub) is central to Coinbase's operations. Every transaction involving crypto, fiat, or funds passes through the systems we design. As one of the most impactful teams within Coinbase, we work at a massive scale in an environment that goes beyond traditional ledgering, ensuring that transactions remain accurate, compliant, auditable, and responsive with continuous availability.
We are seeking a seasoned technical leader to define the engineering vision for FinHub, enhance architectural coherence across our systems, drive platform improvements, and lead the evolution of our architecture.
Responsibilities:
Lead high-impact scaling initiatives and articulate the technical strategy for accommodating millions of additional customers.
Design and develop foundational backend systems, focusing on performance, scalability, and extremely low latency.
Drive collaborative engineering projects that have significant visibility and impact.
Establish and refine organizational best practices, frameworks, and architectural standards.
Monitor industry trends and potential developments to guide the adoption of new technologies.
Provide mentorship to fellow engineers, influence design choices, and elevate engineering quality across the board.
What We Seek:
10+ years of experience in building and operating large-scale distributed systems in a production environment.
Deep knowledge of backend programming languages (e.g., Python, Go, Java) and familiarity with cloud-native architecture.
A proven history of designing high-availability, high-performance systems.
Ability to foresee potential scaling issues and proactively develop solutions.
Experience leading significant cross-functional technical initiatives and mentoring senior engineers.
Dedication to maintaining technical excellence, sharing best practices, and cultivating a robust engineering culture.
Skill in simplifying complex technical concepts into clear, actionable solutions.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in designing and operating large-scale ledgering or trading systems.
Strong financial knowledge with experience managing accounting data and financial transactions accurately.
Experience collaborating closely with finance and accounting departments.

Pay Transparency Notice: The target annual base salary for this position ranges from $253,895 to $298,700 USD, based on your work location. Full-time offers at Coinbase also include eligibility for bonuses, equity, and benefits (including medical, dental, vision, and 401(k)).
