  • Utilizing knowledge of ceramic engineering to identify, initiate, and plan research and development projects to improve abrasive materials or abrasive products of high priority to the organization.
  • Building product concepts to demonstrate feasibility and scale up into manufacturing.
  • Applying technical and leadership skills to generate project scopes, plans, and design of experiments.
  • Strengthening 3M's proprietary position through development of intellectual property.
  • Providing support to manufacturing organizations as needed to ensure product consistency and quality.
  • Utilizing good communication skills to inspire, influence, motivate and teach other team members.

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M is looking for candidates who must have the following qualifications:

  • PhD degree in a science or engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Five (5) years of combined experience in research & development in an academic, private, public, government or military environment

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Ph.D. in Materials Science or Engineering, Inorganic Chemistry, or Ceramic Engineering.
  • Five (5) years of experience in inorganic or ceramic materials research, development and engineering.
  • Strong background in the characterization of inorganic or ceramic materials related to the understanding of the physical properties of materials such as hardness, toughness, microstructure and crystal structure and their behavior in various product applications.
  • Hands-on experience with analytical equipment including SEM, XRD, DSC, and/or TGA.
  • Ability to self-initiate, develop, direct, and complete projects with significant impact to 3M.
  • Proven record of effective teamwork.
  • Experience with creating and executing DOEs (design of experiments) and using data science and analytic techniques in experimentation.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation).
  • Microsoft Office proficient, Minitab or other statistical software is a plus.
