Senior Principal Engineer - Electrical Systems - Aerospace Research The Senior Principal Engineer (SPE) for Electrical Systems shall be recognized as a technical expert and leader who has responsibility for guiding and driving research, innovation, strategy, and technology transfer to the business and external partners in the areas of power generation and conversion and their application in aerospace. The SPE collaborates across disciplines to address complex technical issues, leads major technology programs, and drives technical execution across multiple projects and stakeholder groups. The SPE also serves as a key member of the Digital & Electrical Systems leadership team at GE Aerospace Research, aiding in technology roadmaps and engagement with strategically aligned external pursuits.
Responsibilities
Drive roadmap, strategy, development, and execution of electrical system research with a focus on transitioning technologies from concept to products and/or services for GE internal and external clients. Lead in new technology areas and partner with leaders in related component technologies.
Identify long-term technical challenges and growth opportunities in electrical systems and associated component technologies; develop objectives and action plans for current or future GE Aerospace business units.
Collaborate with team members across multiple technology domains within GE Aerospace Research and GE Aerospace, including Digital & Electrical Systems, Materials & Manufacturing Technology, Aerothermal & Mechanical Systems Technology Disciplines, and related technologists.
Lead major programs in key business units or with governmental agencies such as DARPA, AFRL, and others.
Serve as a world-class technical resource for the organization on complex issues.
Conceptualize, develop, and evaluate leading-edge applied research.
Lead technical reviews of key programs to ensure the right technical approach and quality for customers.
Shape organizational competencies and technical leadership in Electrical Systems; coach and mentor teams for technical excellence.
Develop networks among GE Aerospace and external customers (academia, government agencies/labs, and partners) to maximize outcomes and accelerate innovation.
Coordinate and host internal and external visitors; enable multi-disciplinary teams to explore the future through collaboration.
Qualifications / Requirements
Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, or related fields.
A minimum of 10 years of relevant professional experience and demonstrable experience leveraging computational modeling techniques for the development of manufacturing processes.
A minimum of 7 years of experience leading teams or projects.
Demonstrated deep domain knowledge in electrical systems and component technologies, including applications for electrification of flight and power electronics/conversion in a system context.
Ability to understand customer needs and industry trends to guide strategy, make decisions, and communicate priorities.
Reputation as a "convener" across multiple technical disciplines.
Experience leading large research teams and reporting to executive-level leaders internally and externally.
Proven success in guiding teams to develop novel breakthrough technologies.
Decision-making confidence in ill-defined situations.
Track record of influencing and working with government funding agencies.
Experience identifying and securing funding across a broad external network.
Experience leading large government research programs and writing successful R&D proposals.
Experience working with global teams and driving ideas from concept to demonstration.
Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with ability to lead multi-million-dollar programs with complex stakeholder groups.
Ability to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; U.S. citizenship is a prerequisite.
Desired Qualifications
Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Materials Science, or related fields.
15+ years of relevant professional experience with computational modeling techniques for manufacturing processes.
Thought leadership and ability to lead through influence and collaboration.
Familiarity with GE Aerospace and the ability to leverage networks to achieve outcomes.
Strong international reputation and extensive external network (academia, technical communities, government labs, etc.).
Strong record of peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations.
Ability to manage risk and uncertainty in a dynamic priority setting environment.
Broad technical acumen and ability to understand multiple technology domains.
Ability to thrive in a matrixed team environment; strong facilitation, negotiation, and communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to take an idea from research to a product; excellent communication at all levels of the organization.
Active U.S. Government Security Clearance.
Other Information The base pay range for this position is 150,000 - 275,000 USD annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by factors including experience, education, and skill set. This position is eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on base salary. This posting is expected to close on August 25, 2025.
