Description The Senior Automation & Controls Engineer leads and executes Automation and Controls Engineering design activities for minor to major scale Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects in food, consumer products, pharmaceutical, life science, aerospace, and industrial facilities. Responsible for delivering automation and controls solutions throughout all project phases, from front end to startup. Projects include controls work directly for clients and self-executed EPC projects.
Ensure compliance with safety policies.
Design responsibility for all Automation and Controls scope.
Lead a team of engineers, specialists, and designers, coordinating with project teams across disciplines.
Develop software design deliverables, including PLC, HMI, Batch, MES, servers, and virtualization, and oversee commissioning and startup.
Prepare controls design documents such as instrument lists, I/O lists, narratives, panel and hardware designs, and installation plans.
Manage vendor activities and lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs).
Lead electrical design tasks, including power and motor design, and installation plans.
Define process measurement protocols and select appropriate controls technologies.
Review P&IDs and collaborate with process engineers to define controls scope.
Verify design calculations, reports, and project studies.
Coordinate with offsite design offices and track deliverables.
Perform quality reviews of design submittals.
Apply industry standards, codes, and best practices in automation and controls engineering.
Interface with construction teams for contract development and work execution.
Develop project estimates and support budget tracking.
Engage with clients and vendors to develop designs and foster relationships.
Lead and mentor automation and controls team members.
Allocate resources and coordinate with field personnel for installation and testing.
Lead onsite start-up and commissioning activities.
Manage change notices and understand EPC project approach.
Travel to job sites approximately 30% for surveys, installations, and startups.
Support business development and client engagement activities.
Develop business strategies, review proposals, and support hiring processes.
Ensure compliance with company policies and standards.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Bachelor’s in Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or related from an ABET-accredited program; FE exam completed; 7+ years electrical engineering experience; EPC and automation controls experience preferred.
Master’s in Electrical Engineering with 6+ years experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of electrical design standards (ANSI, IEEE), engineering techniques, and computer skills.
Excellent communication skills.
Experience leading large projects and delegating tasks.
Critical thinking, analytical skills, and attention to detail.
Ability to review engineering documents and travel as needed.
Must obtain or have TWIC; PE license preferred.
Preferred Skills Ability to devise new approaches to problems.
Knowledge of standards like NFPA, ISA, IEC, IEEE, ISA/IEC 61511, ISO13849, UL508A.
Experience with PLC platforms (Rockwell, Siemens, GE, etc.), SCADA systems, MES, safety systems, and related tools.
Experience with safety and process safety standards (ISO13849, ISA/IEC 61511).
Familiarity with tools like SISTEMA, CCW, IAB, BatchSIM, PlantSIM.
