The Andrews Research & Education Surgical Skills Robotics Laboratory Engineer is responsible for providing scientific guidance to generate and sustain research activities, particularly involving biomechanics and robotics. The AREF Surgical Skills Laboratory Engineer will have experience in motion capture systems, robotics, inertial measurement systems, and pressure distribution systems. We are seeking individuals who are passionate about biomechanical engineering to fuse healthcare and robotics.

Research activities include the development of research ideas and protocols for corporate and physician partners’ implementation, evaluation, and publishing. The Surgical Skills Laboratory Engineer will also provide technical skills training and scientific guidance to investigators and assist with problem solving; identify areas of technical difficulty and provide solutions and assess validity of research data. The Surgical Skills Laboratory Engineer will be a significant support position to the Director of Research and Development. They will participate in grant proposal planning and writing, oversee day to day laboratory activities and ensure that all laboratory procedures are performed properly and in adherence to regulation. They will ensure frequent use of the laboratory by orthopedic surgeons, fellows, and community partners.

Works under general supervision, is responsible for various shifts on a salary exempt status, may be subject to over 40 hours per week and/or callback as required, and may also be required to remain on campus immediately before, during, and after severe weather and/or disasters.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Functions as the lead analyst on studies to include cadaveric testing using Instron, Kuka Robot
  • Provides scientific/technical expertise, training, and mentoring to team
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and inventory to facilitate research project completion and fiscal responsibility
  • Facilitates surgical skills labs for in house use and community partners
  • Responsible for physician and team education including GCP training, new programming and research techniques for professionals conducting scientific research or research to facilitate clinical improvements, capture outcomes, or for professional journal publication
  • Serves as a technical expert for the campus and conducts study development, implementation, and analyses independently
  • Assist with R/SAS/SPSS programming and analysis as needed for research studies
  • Collaborates with practitioners, fellows, and clinical research staff on research projects, tasks, and protocol development
  • Contributes to the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs), guidelines, and reference materials
  • Supports the Director of Research and Development and Research team on research studies
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the essential functions of the job and operational needs of the department

3. Provides scientific guidance on the work scope and timeline for proposed research projects and feasibility requests

QUALIFICATIONS FOR JOB: Summary of required and preferred: Registrations, certifications, licensures, education, experience, knowledge skills and abilities.

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering sciences, robotics or a related field
  • Work experience in medical research and/or sports medicine setting including lab experience
  • Experience performing research on cadaveric tissues
  • Knowledge of human biomechanics
  • Experience with biomechanical sensing (Motion capture)
  • Knowledge of writing and submitting applications for Institutional Review Board approval and grant procurement of research projects
  • Experience in authoring scientific papers and other technical writing; including submitting papers to scientific journals for publishing
  • Strong background in research procedures including data collection management, sports medicine and/or biomedical research
  • Experience with multiple software applications in research data collection for medical outcomes, sports medicine and/or biomedical research
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Excel
  • Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
  • Strong background in statistical analysis of biomechanical research
  • Programming experience with R, SAS and/or SPSS
