The Michaelsen Lab
in the
Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine

Research Engineer Assistant
to help design and carry out translational research projects for 12 months. The ideal candidate will have a background in computer science, engineering, or data science potentially with a future interest in attending graduate or medical school. This individual should be excited to learn new skills and be intellectually curious. The study assistant will participate in some combination of the following tasks (depending on the skills and interests of the applicant as well as the needs of the lab) under supervision from the principal investigator (Dr. Michaelsen). Programming skills in R and python are needed to be successful in this role.
Responsibilities include: Data Entry and Analysis – 75%
Screening & Consenting patients – 10%
Research Administration – 15%
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University:
This role is critical for grant funded research currently being conducted at the University of Washington related to perioperative care and safety.
Position Responsibilities
Details Of Major Job Duty & percentage of time:
Data Collection and Analysis – 75%
Under general supervision and guidance:
Constructing medical devices for use in the operating room (such as alarm systems, head-mounted cameras, or monitors for neuromuscular blockade).
Analyzing data with traditional techniques and artificial intelligence (such as predicting patient recovery from neuromuscular blockade) or image analysis
Assist with figure preparation and written descriptions of experiments (contributions of research study assistants are acknowledged with manuscript co-authorship)
Consult with the research team on appropriate management of data collection/entry problems and concerns.
Screening and Consenting Patients – 10%
Obtaining patient consent for research studies and performing these studies in the operating room and intensive care units under the supervision of an anesthesiologist.
Ensure that subjects meet all inclusion and exclusion criteria, following the specific protocol compliance.
Research Administration – 15%
Assist with figure preparation and written descriptions of experiments (contributions of research study assistants are acknowledged with manuscript co-authorship).
Assist in working with medical and undergraduate students on short-term research rotations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Bachelor's degree in engineering, data science or physics and One Year of appropriate experience or equivalent combination of education /experience.
Type and Years of Experience:
One Year of appropriate experience or equivalent education/experience.
Additional Qualifications
Proficiency with R and Python.
Ability to pick up new systems quickly.
Ability to work well independently and within a team.
Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing.
Organized and attentive to detail.
Desirable Qualifications
Experience with database management, data analysis, and presentation is desired.
