_TLDR: __*We’re Hiring!*_ _Join GRAYL as our next __*R&D Engineer*_ _to work on the upstream side of product development—from rough concept to viable prototype. We’re looking for a CAD wizard who is passionate about product, a track record of building highest quality products. A creative problem-solver with a track record of products from concept to market. Hybrid position - 2-3 days/week in our Seattle office. 3-5 weeks per year of travel, including abroad. _
*Our new colleague:*
The R&D Engineer focuses on the ‘upstream’ portion of product development, idea-to-viable prototype, then hand off the project to the pre/production team. This position researches materials and technologies and market potential, uses DFM-influenced CAD to design, build and test prototypes, collaborates with design and manufacturing teams to bring products to life. This individual will effectively communicate across the company to build support for - and receive feedback about - your projects, from a variety of stakeholders.

*The Work:*
GRAYL has several ideas for brand new products and your role will be to help GRAYL clarify those rough ideas and get them into the market. The RD Engineer contributes to all aspects of product development but they own the early stages including: collaborative concept ideation, estimate costing, market research, prototyping. A successful RD Engineer continuously moves ideas from the sandbox and into the development pipeline.
*You will:*
* Build CAD models to demonstrate technical feasibility of future products. Please don’t apply if you are not highly proficient in CAD. * Research feasibility of technologies, materials. Share findings in clear, concise and convincing ways to stakeholders * Build minimum viable prototypes demonstrating the how and and why. Put stuff together using 3d printing, saws, glue and trips to Lowe’s * Test the prototypes- use both your own skills as well as external labs. Create protocols to see if prototypes meet the lofty standards set by GRAYL’s customers * Hand-off primary responsibility to the pre/production team. Assist with production, as required. * Share the magic: show and tell findings with colleagues, share models, prototypes and test results with colleagues in a clear and energetic manner * Collaborate with product managers, developers, content strategists, user researchers, and other designers * Nurture GRAYL’s culture: work hard, play outdoors, love nature * Develop and continually revise project timelines and costing estimates * Work collaboratively with Product, Research and Engineering partners from concept through completion and future iterations * Stay on top of industry trends and emerging technologies * Travel regularly - internationally 3-4 times per year, domestically 2-3 times per year. * Live in or near Seattle. Work in the office 2-3 times per week (flexible).

*Hard Skills:*
* CAD Wizardry. You work efficiently and creatively CAD (we use OnShape, learned easily from Solidworks). Bonus points for decent hand-drawing skills * Estimate Costing. Successful experience building updatable cost models for R&D, testing, tooling and unit-level production. * Understand manufacturing techniques. Injection molding, over molding and blow molding, metal forming and casting, sewing, sonic welding, etc. Basic understanding of electronics and the principles of tool making. * Working knowledge of consumer goods manufacturing: plastics, metals and fabrics. Interest and ability to rapidly become an expert. * 8+ years experience in R&D for physical products. Experience with high-quality packaged consumer products is ideal, not required. * Product Management Experience. Demonstrated ability to think of product family ecosystems and how to win in multiple categories.
