We are seeking a detail-oriented, hands-on, innovative Packaging Engineer to join our team. This role is responsible for the design, development, testing, and implementation of packaging solutions that ensure product quality, meet regulatory and safety standards, and optimize cost and efficiency. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical knowledge of packaging materials, manufacturing processes, and quality control systems, with the ability to drive continuous improvement initiatives across the supply chain.
Responsibilities
Design and develop new packaging systems and components for existing and new products.
Evaluate and select packaging materials based on compatibility, sustainability, cost-effectiveness, and ability to withstand HPP processing while enhancing shelf life.
Troubleshoot and resolve packaging-related issues, including equipment compatibility, material failures, and supplier concerns.
Support packaging trials and product start-ups through hands-on testing, prototyping, and collaboration with external partners.
Collaborate with cross functional teams to help analyze, manage, and communicate all aspects of packaging of finished goods and direct materials to support the global supply plan.
Create, review, and maintain packaging specifications and technical documentation, including CAD drawings and pallet patterns, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements.
Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and deliver high-quality packaging solutions that meet customer expectations.
Partner with suppliers, contract manufacturers, procurement, and operations to ensure packaging feasibility and performance.
Drive sustainability initiatives through packaging optimization, source reduction, and enhanced recyclability.
Provide technical support in response to packaging failures, customer complaints, or operational issues (e.g., film delamination, seal integrity problems).
Coordinate with procurement team and suppliers to source new materials, manage lead times, and evaluate and qualify alternative suppliers.
Stay up to date with industry trends, technologies, and innovations in packaging materials and processes.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field.
2+ years of experience in packaging engineering, preferably in the food industry.
Strong understanding of packaging materials, testing methods, and regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ASTM, ISTA).
Experience working with packaging machinery and understanding of packaging line integration.
Proficiency in CAD software and packaging design tools.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Effective communication and collaboration across departments and with external partners.
Required Skills
Strong understanding of packaging materials, testing methods, and regulatory standards (e.g., FDA, ASTM, ISTA).
Experience working with packaging machinery and understanding of packaging line integration.
Proficiency in CAD software and packaging design tools.
Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills.
Effective communication and collaboration across departments and with external partners.
Preferred Skills
Experience with High-Pressure Processing (HPP).
Experience with flexible and rigid packaging.
Knowledge of sustainability best practices in packaging.
Six Sigma or Lean Manufacturing experience.
Familiarity with ERP systems and quality systems (e.g., SAP, PLM, CAPA systems).
