We are seeking a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Joint Use / Make Ready Engineers for a client in the Birmingham, AL area. This position plays a critical role in the design and coordination of utility pole attachments to support broadband and telecom infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in NESC standards, have experience conducting pole audits, and be able to create make ready engineering packages that ensure compliance, structural integrity, and successful permitting. Responsibilities Pole Attachment Design: Design joint use attachments for utility poles and recommend make ready work to ensure compliance and structural soundness.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all pole designs meet NESC, GO95 (if applicable), and local utility standards and requirements.
Field Work & Assessments: Conduct site walks, pole audits, and inspections to evaluate pole conditions and identify code violations or structural concerns.
Make Ready Engineering: Develop engineering solutions for poles that fail load analysis and create complete make ready packages including construction-ready documentation.
Stakeholder Collaboration: Coordinate with pole owners, permitting agencies, internal design teams, and contractors to ensure seamless execution of projects.
Permitting Support: Prepare and submit joint use permit applications in accordance with jurisdictional and utility-specific requirements.
Quality Control: Review and verify the accuracy of make ready documentation and pole load calculations before submission or construction.
What will catch our eye: 2+ years of experience in Joint Use / Make Ready Engineering or utility pole/telecom engineering. Strong understanding of aerial infrastructure, utility distribution design, and pole attachment protocols. Familiarity with relevant codes and standards: NESC, GO95 (where applicable), and local utility requirements. Experience preparing pole load analysis reports and make ready documentation. Willingness to travel as needed for field inspections and project meetings
