Summary:

The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a key role in supporting the daily operations, maintenance, and repair of all building systems in a high-rise residential environment. Working closely with the Chief Engineer, this position helps oversee engineering staff and ensures that safety, building codes, preventative maintenance, and operational standards are consistently met.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in managing day-to-day building operations, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical, life safety, and general maintenance.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance tasks across building systems and equipment.
  • Support the Chief Engineer in supervising, training, and evaluating engineering staff.
  • Ensure building equipment is operating efficiently and safely at all times.
  • Coordinate with vendors and contractors for inspections, repairs, and special projects.
  • Monitor building automation systems (BAS) and respond to alerts or alarms.
  • Maintain accurate records, logs, and reports for inspections, compliance, and inventory.
  • Respond to after-hours emergencies as needed.
  • Assist with budget tracking, supplies, and purchasing of materials.
  • Foster a professional and respectful working environment among team members and residents.
  • Other duties as assigned
Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • 3–5 years of hands-on building maintenance or engineering experience, preferably in high-rise or luxury residential settings.
  • Familiarity with major building systems (HVAC, boilers, chillers, elevators, fire/life safety).
  • Basic understanding of building codes, OSHA regulations, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Experience leading or mentoring junior staff is preferred.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with residents, vendors, and management.
  • Availability for on-call rotations or emergency response.

Required or Preferred Certifications:

  • Universal EPA Certification (Required)
  • CFC Certification (Required)
  • OSHA 10 or 30-Hour Certification (Preferred)
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) (Preferred, if applicable to property amenities)
  • LEED Certification or familiarity with energy-efficient practices (Preferred)
  • Fire/Life Safety Certification (FLS or equivalent) – as required by local jurisdiction

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent helpful.
  • Minimum of one year related job experience.

Language Skills:

The individual must have strong written communication skills, and the ability to communicate effectively with employees and clients at all levels of the organization, both verbally and in writing.

Physical Job Description

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent walking, standing, climbing ladders, and working in mechanical rooms.
  • Comfortable working in indoor and outdoor environments and in varying weather conditions.
