About the Team The Intelligence and Investigations team seeks to rapidly detect and disrupt abuse in AI technologies to ensure their safe use. We are dedicated to identifying emerging abuse trends, analyzing risks, and working with our internal partners to implement effective mitigation strategies to protect against misuse. Our efforts contribute to OpenAI's overarching goal of developing AI that benefits all of humanity. About the Role As an Intelligence Systems Engineer, you’ll be working on our Intelligence & Investigations team at OpenAI, ensuring the safe and responsible use of AI across our products and services. Our team is at the cutting edge of applying AI to detect, analyze, and disrupt abuse. We are seeking a self-starter generalist engineer to build data intensive, AI-powered applications that enable internal teams to make sense of large, open-domain datasets, fight abuse, and inform high-stakes decisions. You will work with a cross-functional team of engineers, data scientists, and subject matter experts across teams like Product Policy, Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, and Research to jointly advance our mission to ensure AI benefits everyone. The ideal candidate has strong application development and data analysis skills, with a background in both prototyping novel tools and building systems that process vast amounts of data to detect anomalies, enable rapid search, and support mission critical analytical and investigative workflows. We value professionals with outstanding communication skills, a commitment to continuous learning, and who are dedicated to promoting the responsible use of AI. This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees. In this role, you will: Prototype, build, and maintain at-scale intelligence systems that detect, triage, and monitor targeted signals from both open-source and internal data
Analyze requirements and deliver end-to-end solutions that address complex intelligence challenges while ensuring code quality and scalability
Be a crucial technical bridge between our team and teams like Product Policy, Platform Integrity, Safety Systems, and Research.
Contribute to shaping the team’s technical strategy
Design user interfaces for non-technical investigators and analysts
Prototype new applications to automate team workflows and route leads
Report on scaled impact using advanced data analysis and visualization products
Work closely with internal stakeholders and address their technical intelligence needs
You might thrive in this role if you: Have a strong software engineering foundation and enjoy owning systems end-to-end—from infrastructure and data ingestion to frontend tooling
Are energized by working at the frontier of AI capabilities, rapidly integrating new models, APIs, and research into practical systems
Have experience building and operating large-scale data pipelines or search/retrieval systems
Are proficient in Python and/or TypeScript, and familiar with tools like Spark, Kafka, Flink, or Rockset
Take a product-minded approach, designing with user workflows in mind and iterating quickly based on feedback
Favor pragmatic, reliable solutions and know when to optimize for simplicity versus scale or polish
Are comfortable navigating ambiguity and open-ended problem spaces with evolving goals
Thrive with high autonomy and proactively identify and drive high-leverage technical work
Are deeply curious about how people misuse AI and motivated to help mitigate that harm
Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams across engineering, policy, and research
