Fire Prevention Services ensures a safe environment for faculty, staff, and students by providing an up-to-date prevention program. Our fire safety professionals monitor all university buildings for compliance with local and state requirements and work closely with the community to perform the inspections and drills necessary to lower the risk and potential repercussions of fire on campus.

Purpose
Fire Prevention Services (FPS) ensures a safe environment for students, faculty, and staff by providing a comprehensive fire prevention program. Our dedicated team of fire protection engineers and certified fire inspectors ensure compliance with state and local fire codes via thorough inspections, plan reviews, and community outreach. We work closely with the university community on a variety of complex fire and life safety issues to protect and promote a world-class university experience.
Responsibilities
Conducts design reviews for new construction and renovation projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards including IBC, NFPA 101, NFPA1, NFPA 13, and NFPA 72.
Collaborates with project teams and owners to solve complex fire and life safety challenges for novel, complex, mission critical, and historic buildings.
Conducts inspections and compliance checks for building construction and fire protection systems.
Develops and updates campus standards and specifications for fire protection systems and life safety equipment at the university.
Provides fire and life safety code consulting and risk analysis to building managers, laboratories, CSUs, Campus Operations, and FPS staff to meet regulatory requirements and best practices to mitigate risk from fire.
Examines, offers feedback on, and authorizes relevant permit applications.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in fire protection engineering or related field plus 6 years of experience, or Master’s degree in fire protection engineering or related field plus 5 years of experience in design or review of fire protection systems and building fire safety and egress features. Comprehensive understanding of building and fire codes, including: International Building Code, International Fire Code, NFPA 101, NFPA 1, NFPA 13, NFPA 72, NFPA 45 and NFPA 30. Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications to verify compliance codes, standards, and other requirements. Proven ability to manage multiple project assignments to complete work accurately and on time. Strong communication skills with the ability to interact with project teams, construction personnel, clients, and management to convey technical information and requirements in a meaningful way to the appropriate audience.
Preferred Qualifications
Degree in fire protection engineering plus 10 years of experience in design review of fire protection systems and life safety features in new construction and major renovation projects. Strong background in fire sprinkler, standpipe, and fire pump system design or plan review. Experience in applying codes and standards in hospital construction and renovation projects. Experience developing or approving alternate means and methods and rational analyses for performance-based compliance with codes and standards
Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
Salary Range
$115,000 + depending on qualifications

May be required to operate forklifts, personnel lifts and cranes. Operate job related equipment.
May be required to perform elevated work. Occasional work from ladders and/or scaffolds.
May require tuberculosis screening and occasional use of a respirator.
Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
Participate in on-call program.
Work Shift
40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, 08:00 AM – 05:00 PM
