Job Purpose
The Lead Audio Engineer is a key member of our production team, responsible for managing all audio-related elements at the Seawell Ballroom. From mixing front-of-house and monitor sound to managing wireless systems, playback, and recording, this position will ensure audio systems are delivering clear, high-quality sound for every event. This position will also support live-streamed and hybrid events, helping to create seamless experiences for both in-person and virtual audiences.
This role is hands-on and collaborative. In addition to the technical responsibilities, this position is part of the team that helps bring each event to life, whether that means assisting with rigging, draping, or decor setup. We are looking for someone who is technically skilled, adaptable, and ready to jump in wherever needed to help make every event a success.
Duties and Responsibilities
Primary Audio Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a co-lead audio engineer to manage all audio systems for events.
- Work closely with event managers, video engineers, lighting designers, and rigging/decor teams to execute high-end productions in the Ballroom.
- Operate and maintain audio systems including digital and analog consoles, wireless microphones, DSPs, amplifiers, monitors, and playback/recording devices.
- Design and implement audio system layouts based on event needs, including input/output patching, stage plots, and signal routing.
- Program and adjust EQ, delay, dynamics, and other processing for optimal sound in a variety of configurations.
- Provide real-time troubleshooting and solutions during live events, often in high-pressure environments.
- Occasionally meet with clients to understand and execute their audio vision.
- Operate scissor lifts and use fall protection when required (training provided).
- Support other departments as needed, including video, lighting, and rigging (cross-training provided).
Operations & Logistics
- Interpret event timelines, BEOs (Banquet Event Orders), and CAD drawings/floorplans.
- Follow DCPA operational procedures and documentation to protect equipment and facilities.
- Manage time effectively in fast-paced setups and quick turnarounds.
- Operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other tools (training provided).
- Use common tools (wrenches, drills, rope) and tie basic knots (*bowline, *clove hitch, sheet bend).
- Rig, focus, and align projectors properly (including proper safety tie-offs); troubleshoot video systems efficiently.
- Support all areas of production. Our team is cross-trained and collaborative.
Essential Skillsets:
- Strong understanding of live audio reinforcement, including wireless and wired microphones, in-ear monitors, and distributed speaker systems.
- Proficient in both digital and analog audio systems, with a solid grasp of signal flow, gain structure, and system integration.
- Excellent critical listening skills with the ability to mix from an isolated, soundproof booth using near-field monitors.
- Comfortable working at heights and experienced in rigging and flying audio systems up to 25 feet. Touring or venue rigging experience is a plus.
- Technically proficient with computers and audio-related software, including:
- Microsoft Office Suite & Microsoft Teams
- Q-SYS Designer
- Smaart (RTA and system tuning)
- Lake Controller
- Waves and other digital effects platforms
- Ability to interpret Vectorworks plots
- Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and working in environments that require fall protection (training provided).
Administrative & Maintenance
- Maintain detailed logs of equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Collaborate with the Technical Director and Technical Manager on capital improvement ideas.
- Ensure equipment inventory is stocked and up to date.
- Perform routine cleaning and upkeep of audio gear with documentation.
- Client and event playlists kept on track and up to date
- Help train crew and new hires on audio systems and software.
- Certifications like QSYS and CTS are a plus.
Secondary Responsibilities:
Team & Client Relations
- Build strong working relationships with clients and team members.
- Contribute to creative, budget-conscious event solutions in a collaborative environment.
- Contribute to video elements for events staying conscious of proper maintenance and paperwork. Contribute to day-to-day full team décor, rigging, and other job responsibilities.
Qualifications
- 3-5 years of experience as an Audio Engineer or Audio Specialist in live event or live music settings.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient with professional audio systems and equipment, including:
- Digital consoles: DiGiCo SD12, SD9; Avid VENUE systems
- Processing systems: Lake (including MDX88), QSC Q-SYS
- Analog mixers and signal routing
- Experienced with a wide range of microphones and speaker systems:
- Wired and wireless microphones, lavaliers, Countryman headsets
- Powered speakers and flown line array systems
- Comfortable working across multiple platforms and systems:
- iOS, PC, and Mac operating systems
- Basic networking and IP-based audio systems
- Skilled in the use of production equipment and tools:
- Scissor lifts, pallet jacks (Big Joe), forklifts, and CM chain hoists
- Familiarity with hand tools and safe rigging practices

Working Conditions
This position operates in both a professional A/V booth and a dynamic live event environment, primarily within the Seawell Ballroom. While a standard weekday schedule (9 a.m. – 5 p.m.) is common when events are not in session, the role also requires availability for evenings, weekends, and holidays based on event needs.
The role involves physical activity, including the ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds, as well as bending, stooping, crawling, and working at heights up to 30 feet. Operation of equipment such as scissor lifts and forklifts may be required. Certification and training will be provided as needed. The position also requires quick response times and the ability to assist with guest direction in accordance with emergency protocols.
Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to communicate clearly in person and via email and must be able to remain active and on their feet for extended periods. Frequent movement throughout the booth and event space is expected, including the use of hands and arms to operate equipment, handle gear, and reach overhead.
This position requires the ability to:
- Lift, push, or pull up to 50 pounds
- Work at heights up to 30 feet (fall protection training provided)
- Bend, stoop, crawl, and perform other physical tasks as needed
- Operate equipment such as scissor lifts and forklifts (certification provided)
- React quickly and assist with guest direction in accordance with emergency procedures
Compensation
$29.00 - $31.00 hourly
