From a risk and potential hazard prevention perspective, support and guide Design Engineering teams by reviewing product designs, developing safety recommendations using engineering judgment, and participating in detailed design safety reviews. Oversee and troubleshooting prototype evaluations, contribute to resolution of complex safety issues, and assist in the development and continuous improvement of internal product safety standards, processes, and documentation practices.

Position Responsibilities may include:

  • Review HVAC product designs to identify potential hazards and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of safety standards and risk assessment procedures.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure alignment of risk mitigation and design direction.
  • Oversee prototype safety evaluations and ensure results are clearly communicated and acted upon.
  • Coordinate with test labs, and internal stakeholders for issue resolution and design improvement.
  • Provide input on test plans, simulation results, and corrective actions related to safety.
  • Discuss and present recommendations to the Safety Committee and follow through on decisions.
  • Communicate potential safety, schedule, or design risks in a timely manner.
  • Mentor’s entry level safety engineers and review their deliverables.
  • Participate in safety-related training or knowledge-sharing efforts.
  • Perform additional projects/duties to support ongoing business needs.

Nature & Scope:

  • Manages large projects or processes with limited oversight from manager
  • Coaches, reviews, and delegates work to lower-level professionals
  • Problems faced are difficult and often complex

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical, electrical, and/or chemical engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis, risk documentation, and test plan evaluation.
  • Familiarity with applicable safety standards such as UL, IEC, NEC (NFPA 70) and other recognized product safety certification standards.
  • Skilled in technical communication, collaboration, and decision support.
  • Software skills including Microsoft Office and engineering documentation tools.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project tracking skills.
  • Ability to apply good judgment and work independently across departments.

Experience:

  • 10-12 years of overall engineering experience, preferably in a high-volume HVAC manufacturing environment
  • At least 6 years of experience in product safety or product design, with exposure to HVAC, appliance, or automotive industries (preferred)

Education/Certification:

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field – required
  • Black Belt or Green Belt certification – preferred
  • Project management certification – preferred
