Overall Responsibilities:
The DFM Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring that customer designs are optimized for manufacturability, testability, and cost-effectiveness in a high-mix EMS environment. This role supports the new product introduction (NPI) process by analyzing PCB design data, identifying potential issues early, and collaborating with customers and internal teams to implement improvements. Expertise in Mentor Graphics Valor NPI is essential.
Duties :
Perform comprehensive DFM and DFA (Design for Assembly) analysis using Valor NPI software on incoming PCB and assembly data.
Generate and review DFM reports, identifying manufacturing risks, violations, and improvement opportunities.
Provide timely feedback and design recommendations to internal stakeholders and customers.
Support NPI and quoting teams by evaluating manufacturability during early design phases.
Work closely with Process, Test, and Quality Engineers to align design constraints with factory capabilities.
Create design guidelines and DFM checklists for key customers and technologies.
Participate in customer DFM review meetings and support resolution of design-related issues.
Drive standardization and continuous improvement in the DFM process and tool utilization.
Maintain and update Valor NPI rule sets in accordance with evolving manufacturing capabilities and customer requirements.
Assist in evaluating component placement, routing, via structures, and panelization for optimal manufacturability.
Design for Fabrication: Being the check of customer designs to ensure that our fab houses could produce the boards.
Train and develop internal DFM subject matter experts with SMTC.
Qualifications :
BS Degree in a related Engineering discipline preferred.
Lean and/or Six Sigma Yellow, Green or Black Belt Certification preferred.
Experience
Has 3+ years’ experience in DFM/PCB layout or NPI within the EMS or PCB manufacturing industry.
Must have excellent analytical, communication, customer-facing presentation and cross-functional collaboration skills.
Strong knowledge of SMT and PTH assembly processes, IPC standards, and PCB fabrication constraints.
Expert-level experience with Valor NPI software (rule setup, validation, report generation, scripting a plus).
Familiarity with EDA/CAD tools (e.g., Altium, Mentor, Cadence, Zuken) and file formats (ODB++, Gerber, IPC-2581).
Ability to interpret technical drawings, BOMs, and assembly documentation.
Strong knowledge of PCB design technologies including high speed, high impedance and high voltage layout
Must demonstrate flexibility, self-direction, and self-discipline to plan and accomplish objectives and meet deadlines with limited supervision.
Experience with high-reliability sectors (automotive, aerospace, medical)
Knowledge of Lean/Six Sigma methodologies
Familiarity with PLM or ERP systems (e.g., Arena, Agile, SAP)
Physical :
Primarily a desk-based role requiring extended periods of sitting, computer work, and screen use to analyze PCB design data and generate reports.
Occasional walking through manufacturing areas or participating in on-site meetings; must be able to navigate production environments safely.
Ability to communicate effectively in-person and via digital platforms with internal teams and external customers.
Mental :
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required to evaluate complex design data and make recommendations for manufacturability and quality improvements.
Ability to manage multiple projects, meet tight deadlines, and adapt to changing priorities in a high-mix, fast-paced environment.
Effective communication and collaboration skills to lead technical discussions, influence cross-functional teams, and engage with customers on design issues.
Travel : 10-20% of the time to sites or customers
