Electromagnetic Engineer Job Description: In MACOM's MMIC Business Unit we design MMICs and IMAs for cellular, aerospace& defense, and other wireless applications. We are looking for a microwave electromagnetic engineer for the mmWave module design team at MACOM’s Northampton, MA Center of Excellence with experience designing passive structures such as power combiners, couplers, waveguide launches, non-reciprocal ferrite devices, and antenna products. Experience with active microwave circuits is a plus. You will: Be responsible for the electromagnetic design, layout, test, and release of RF/MMW products and functional components of IMAs. Design customized versions of the following items in waveguide, microstrip, stripline, or other distributed transmission line systems: Circulators, couplers, isolators, power divider/combiners, attenuators, phase shifters, and terminations. Support design of industry leading solid state power amplifiers using high performance combiner/divider networks. Design transitions to/from waveguide, microstrip, stripline, coplanar waveguide, twisted pair, coaxial, and twin lead. Executing schematic circuit simulations and EM simulations where appropriate. Generating layouts and assembly drawings. Work with our MMIC design, analog/digital design, mechanical design, assembly, and test teams to develop new products as well as new production methods. Initiate prototype builds and manage product characterization. You will design evaluation hardware and characterization fixtures, then direct or perform measurements. Analyze analog and digital circuits using tools such as PSpice, TINA, QUCS, Multisim, Excel, etc. Deep mathematical and data analysis/data science using tools such as MATLAB, Python, Scilab, R, or JMP. Generating layouts and assembly drawings. Generating test plans and work instructions in collaboration with other departments such as Operations, Product Engineering, Test Engineering, and Applications Engineering. Generating design reports, progress reports, test reports, data sheets, and bills of material. Initiate prototype builds and perform product characterization. You will design evaluation boards and characterization fixtures, then direct or perform measurements. Generating design reports, progress reports, test reports, datasheets and bill of materials. Organizing design reviews. Cooperating with the Project Manager in order to maintain an up-to-date project plan and schedule. Work with our Product Engineering group to transfer the product to production. Maintaining a passion and unquenching thirst for the latest advances in Maxwell’s equations, electromagnetic design, RF/MMW 3D structures, simulation, materials, technology, and implementation. Keeping up to date with the latest technologies (semiconductor, conductivities and other parameters of new metals, assembly, packaging, tools). Customer support (sampling and application notes). Qualifications: B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent. M.S. in Electrical Engineering preferred. Strong academic background that includes courses such as Microwave Engineering, Electromagnetic Theory, and Antenna Theory. Bona fide electronics and microwave structure enthusiast. Familiarity with RF/MMW IMA design techniques. Proficiency with EM simulation tools such as HFSS, COMSOL, EMPro, or WIPL-D (HFSS preferred). Proficiency with RF simulation tools such as MWO or ADS (ADS preferred). Unparalleled time management skills and an unquenching thirst for working for multiple managers with competing priorities and conflicting deadlines. Familiarity with RF system simulation tools (such as Genesys or SystemVue). Familiarity with embedded digital design toolchains for microcontrollers and FPGA's (such as Atmel, Xilinx). Familiarity with SPICE simulation tools. Familiarity with PCB layout tools such as Altium, PADS, or KiCAD. Familiarity with RF measurement techniques for small-signal and large-signal. characterization of amplifiers: bench calibration, S-parameters, 1-tone and 2-tone power sweep measurements, pulsed measurements. Good communication, organization and documentation skills. Strong Excel, Word, and PowerPoint skills. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build long lasting partnerships. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Willingness to travel occasionally. Fluent in spoken and written English.
