Position Summary: The Design Engineer contributes to the design, development, and continuous improvement of custom transport containers, cable harnesses, and mechanical assemblies supporting satellite and space programs. You will use industry-standard CAD software to produce detailed 3D models, drawings, and documentation, while also collaborating closely with our Operations team to improve manufacturability and tooling for production.
Design Engineers also work with Operations Team to support Production through process improvement and new production tools. Design engineers must overcome numerous technical (and other) hurdles to deliver a design that meets the outlined specifications with a strong attention to detail and a creative flair while maintaining good communication with internal and external teams.
Essential Job Function:
Design and Project Coordination for Large Design Projects
- Design custom packaging and transportation solutions for various industries including biomedical and aerospace/defense
- Conduct consultation and e-mail correspondence with clients to transition packaging concepts to drawings in a timely manner.
- Generate documentation for production which includes design, cut lists, cost of material list and BOM’s
- Generate job estimates and Develop Quotes in Salesforce. Present prototypes and designs to customers and internal teams
- Prioritize tasks with input from Operations Engineer, develop functional designs that the operations team will utilize to build the finished product
- Identify and source purchased items for projects and work with purchasing team to acquire components.
- Identify new business opportunities based on customer needs
Production Support
- Work a part of operations and engineering team to develop new products and processes to expand the company’s product lines
- Develop improvements (jigs, fixtures, processes) to further lean manufacturing initiatives.
- Collaborate with Customers, Sales, Scheduling and Production Departments (Crating, Case & Foam and Cables).
- Set up and Manage Maintenance Program for Production Equipment.
- Cross train and work in other divisions/departments as needed
- Demonstrate and apply our internal and external company values (aka "Anchors") by working positively and collaboratively with team members and customers to form good partnerships and great teams while innovating, eliminating the non-essential and improving.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- proficiency in SolidWorks (preferred) or AutoCAD, including 3D modeling, drawing creation, and file management; working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications; experience with Salesforce is a plus but not required.
- Basic understanding of design safety standards and environmental considerations relevant to aerospace and industrial hardware.
- Familiarity with Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) principles, with the ability to apply them under supervision.
- Ability to read, interpret, and create engineering drawings and assembly documentation in accordance with industry standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, using logic and structured thinking to evaluate alternatives and recommend solutions.
- Effective planning and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
- Professional communication and customer service orientation, including active listening and responsiveness to internal and external stakeholder needs.
- High attention to detail and accuracy, with a commitment to following procedures and maintaining high-quality documentation.
- Basic machining or fabrication knowledge (hands-on experience from coursework, internships, or personal projects is a plus).
- Willingness to learn and follow manufacturing processes, quality controls, and applicable industry regulations, including ISO 9001:2015, AS9100, and (where applicable) ISO 13485.
Education and Experience preferred:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or a closely related field.
- Interest in structural design, mechanical hardware, or packaging for high-value aerospace or industrial applications.
- Good working knowledge of SolidWorks/AutoCAD, machining, and fabrication techniques.
