Crab Engineer-Deckhand

Coastal Alaska Premier Seafoods, a subsidiary of Coastal Villages Region Fund, is currently seeking applications for engineer/deckhands aboard our Crab Catcher vessels. The primary responsibilities of this position include assisting in maintaining the vessel's engines, power systems, deck machinery, hydraulic, electrical, piping, plumbing, and refrigeration systems. This position also performs the duties of a deckhand. Additional responsibilities may include shipyard work, loading and unloading supplies, cleaning vessel and equipment, and other duties as assigned.
The following information aims to provide potential candidates with a better understanding of the requirements for this role. This role is physically demanding and requires working in adverse weather conditions, often for long shifts of 12-16 hours, and sometimes up to 24 hours. Applicants must have a current USCG License with endorsements and merchant mariner documentation, with at least one year of experience as an Assistant Engineer in the Bearing Sea and three or more years as a deckhand on a crab vessel. Specific Duties Include: Maintaining vessel systems for safety and functionality Passing firefighting, HAZWOPER, drills, and regulatory courses Sorting crab ensuring regulatory compliance Maintaining a safe, clean environment Assisting with offloads and loading supplies Handling live seafood and crab pots safely Working safely on uneven, slippery, and moving surfaces Working long hours in challenging conditions Participating in safety drills and training Other duties as assigned This position reports directly to the Captain and is seasonal, non-exempt, with a crewshare starting wage. Coastal Villages Region Fund enforces a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy, requiring successful completion of background checks, drug tests, and reference checks. Applicants must be willing to live and work in confined spaces and be away from home for extended periods. Good communication, self-motivation, and teamwork are essential. Requirements: Proper USCG license and endorsements One year of Assistant Engineer experience in the Bearing Sea Three years of deckhand experience on a crab vessel Knowledge of oil spill response and hazardous materials handling Effective communication skills Physical Demands: Meeting USCG physical standards Ability to pass drug tests Ability to board/exiting vessels using ladders Climbing stairs and ladders in all weather conditions Lifting heavy items repeatedly Working long, variable shifts in strenuous and hazardous conditions Performing physical tasks requiring strength, balance, and dexterity Basic Mental Functions: Basic math skills and proficiency in English Ability to perform under stressful, noisy, and adverse conditions Upon conditional offer, medical clearance may be required to ensure safe performance in remote, hazardous environments.
