SUMMARY
The Commissioning Engineer or Technician is responsible for testing and commissioning substation protection and control systems for our clients.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Lead onsite testing and commissioning activities for all substation-related equipment to maintain project schedules and deadlines. Develop substation energization plans and lead operation and maintenance programs. Provide technical guidance to ensure adherence to industry standards and best practices. Maintain a safe workplace and implement safe and environmentally sound work practices, and ensure compliance with applicable regulations. Conduct safety assessments and briefings with the testing crew, outlining current job site conditions, power system status, and emergency response procedures. Review substation drawings and conduct point-to-point checks. Develop substation equipment and protective relay commissioning and testing procedures. Modify, test, and commission substation Data Concentrator Units (DCU) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). Download Sequence of Event records and COMTRADE files as part of relay event analysis. Prepare and deliver technical reports and documentation. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and contractors to ensure project success. Keep stakeholders and updated and abreast of project status. Perform data analysis and assist in troubleshooting electrical issues, following all applicable safety regulations. Perform other duties as assigned.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Frequent standing and walking for extended periods, often over uneven terrain or in tight spaces. Regular bending, kneeling, and stooping to collect samples or operate equipment at ground level. Frequent and repetitive motions, such as reaching, stretching, twisting, and turning, are common. Frequent use of hands and fingers to handle, control, and operate tools, devices, and small components. Occasional climbing on slopes, embankments, or ladders. Must have clear vision (with or without corrective lenses) for close work and distance judgment. Adequate hearing and speech for communicating in noisy environments and hearing site safety instructions. Extended exposure to outdoor conditions, including heat, cold, rain, dust, mud, and noise, for extended periods.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field with 10 years of power industry experience, or a similar combination. Strong understanding of power systems, including generation, transmission, and distribution. Protection relay and automation device configuration and testing knowledge. Troubleshooting skills in protection and control, automation, HMI, or relay networks. Passion for renewable energy and sustainable solutions. Excellent listening, reading, communication (technical, written, & verbal), attention to detail, and problem-solving skills. Valid drivers license and ability to travel frequently to job sites. NETA training or certification, preferred.
