Coastal Engineer

The Coastal Engineer at Black & Veatch develops and applies advanced engineering techniques, concepts and approaches to complex engineering problems, such as developing plans and design for urban water-front and coastal structures projects, including marinas, marine terminals, urban waterfront developments, and cruise ship facilities. Projects will likely involve dredging, wetland restoration, shore protection structures, and flood walls.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Participate in the analysis and design of coastal restoration projects, including marsh restoration, beach nourishment, shoreline protection, dredging, and more.
  • Develop construction plans and specifications in various areas such as harbors, marinas, vessel mooring and berthing structures, bulkheads and seawalls, breakwaters and shore protection structures, beaches, shoreline stabilization, and sediment management to successfully implement projects.
  • Oversee waterfront structure and marine infrastructure construction projects on the coast.
  • Contribute to our growing team of numerical modeling experts developing wave, tidal circulation, storm surge, passing vessel, and tsunami models.
  • Assist and lead the development of proposals, cost estimates, and project management activities.
  • Interact with clients and foster Black & Veatch's reputation within the community and the industry.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in coastal engineering projects.
  • Experience with numerical modeling of waves, tidal circulation, and storm surge.
  • Strong experience in development of construction plans, specifications, and project management.
  • The candidate may focus on technical topics or engineering design and execution.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal, written, and presentation).
  • Demonstrate familiarity with wave growth and transformation, coastal and estuarine hydrodynamics, littoral processes, sediment transport, marine dredging, and basic geotechnical or structural systems.
  • Ability to work independently in addition to planning, organizing, and assisting groups of medium to large teams of professionals and technician's dependent on project/task.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in engineering from either a recognized accredited program in their home country or the country in which the professional is practicing.
  • Minimum of 3 years related work experience.
  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements (if selected) which may include any/all of the following: criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search, in compliance with any applicable laws and regulations.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment based upon manager discretion, job performance and work assignments. Majority of work is office based. Some site visits will be required which may necessitate navigating unpaved or natural terrain while carrying equipment.
