General Definition of Work

Civil Engineer I, II
Performs intermediate professional work involving the planning, design, construction and inspection of a variety of public works and utilities projects; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the assigned supervisor.

Civil Engineer III
Performs difficult professional and administrative work involving the planning, design, construction and inspection of complex public works and utilities projects; does related work as required. Work is performed under the general direction of the assigned supervisor. Supervision is exercised over a group of subordinate professional and technical personnel.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Civil Engineer I
General knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as related to the preparation of plans and specifications in the area assigned; basic knowledge of modern utility projects; ability to perform difficult engineering computations on engineering problems and planning; ability to establish effective working relationships with City officials, employees, contractors, and the general public; skill in the use of civil engineering instruments and equipment; ability to communicate complete ideas effectively, orally, and in writing; ability to calculate detailed cost reports. Assignments are usually broad in scope with opportunity for some independent professional judgment.

Civil Engineer II
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as related to the preparation of plans and specifications in the area assigned; basic knowledge of modern utility projects; ability to perform difficult engineering computations on engineering problems and planning; ability to establish effective working relationships with City officials, employees, contractors, and the general public; skill in the use of civil engineering instruments and equipment; ability to communicate complete ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to calculate detailed cost reports. Assignments are usually broad in scope with opportunity for some independent professional judgment.

Civil Engineer III
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as applied to the design, development and construction of complex public works and utilities facilities; considerable knowledge of the current literature, trends and developments in the field of engineering specialization; comprehensive knowledge of modern methods and techniques as applied to the design, construction and maintenance of public works and utilities projects; general knowledge of the principles of supervision, organization and administration; demonstrated ability to plan, direct and coordinate the work of subordinate professional and technical personnel; ability to perform complex engineering computation and to make comprehensive recommendations on engineering problems and planning; ability to establish effective working relationships with City officials, employees, contractors, developers and the general public; ability to communicate complete ideas effectively, orally and in writing; ability to calculate complex cost reports. Assignments are broad in scope and afford opportunities to exercise considerable independent judgment in the development and completion of a variety of engineering projects.
