The Chief Engineer is responsible for the efficient and safe operation of all engine room machinery and equipment, ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and company standards. This includes supervising the engineering team, maintaining operational readiness, and ensuring all logs and records are accurately maintained.
Chief Engineer DDE 4000 Responsibilities Ensure engine room staff are trained, understand their duties, and are familiar with emergency procedures.
Issue and enforce Standing Orders; verify that engineers read and comprehend these instructions.
Provide Night Orders daily to supplement Standing Orders, and ensure engineers check them.
Conduct automation testing as per vessel automation procedures.
Ensure either the Chief Engineer or a representative from the Maintenance Department is on board at all times.
Maintain accurate and up-to-date: Engine room logs Monthly reports Running hour records Oil Record Book Garbage Record Log Fuel and oil samples and analysis records Coolant analysis reports
Monitor sludge and bilge tank levels; investigate any abnormal increases.
Operate and oversee the Oily Water Separator and associated equipment.
Supervise operation and maintenance of pumps, motors, blowers, A/C, and refrigeration systems.
Advise the Maintenance Department on upkeep, checks, and spares for machinery.
Supervise STS (Ship-to-Ship) operations, especially winch and tugger usage, until crew competence is verified.
Maintain strict housekeeping in all engineering spaces—no tools, rags, or garbage left unsecured.
Oversee bunkering operations: Ensure correct quantity and quality Maintain oil record book entries Complete proper fuel transfer procedures and permits

OICEW (Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch)
USCG MMC (Merchant Mariner Credential)
TWIC (Transportation Worker Identification Credential) or renewal receipt
Basic Safety Training (BST)
Medical Care Provider Certification
RFPEW (Rating Forming Part of an Engineering Watch)
Advanced Fire Fighting Certification
VPDSD (Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties)
PSC (Proficiency in Survival Craft)
