Description Job Summary The Automation and Controls Engineer focuses on supporting and enhancing the site’s control systems, including programming control logic and batch recipes, and ensuring the safe operation of Safety Instrumented Systems. The engineer utilizes data analysis and process optimization skills, leads automation projects, manages changes through MOC administration, and contributes to overall plant efficiency and safety.
Key Responsibilities Essential Functions and Responsibilities
· System Support - Provide support for plant control systems, primarily our DeltaV DCS, troubleshooting and resolving control system issues to minimize production downtime. Develop and execute multi-year objectives for maintenance and replacement of the distributed control system and instruments. · Programming & Configuration - Design, develop, implement, and test control logic using DeltaV suite (e.g., Function Block Diagrams). This includes configuring I/O, creating and modifying graphical user interfaces, developing and optimizing batch recipes (Phase Logic, Operations, Unit Procedures), and implementing advanced control strategies. · Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) - Participate in the design, implementation, testing, and validation of Safety Instrumented Systems, adhering to relevant standards. Manage hardware lifecycle of safety instrumented functions and oversee annual testing. · Process Optimization & Data Analytics - Collaborate with process engineers and operations staff to identify opportunities for improving control strategies, optimizing batch cycles, and enhancing overall process performance. This includes leveraging OSIsoft PI Vision for data visualization, trend analysis, and creating dashboards to monitor process performance and drive data-driven optimization efforts. · Safety and Compliance - Ensure all control systems and modifications comply with safety standards, environmental regulations, and company policies. Participate in process hazard analyses and implement safety interlocks. · Documentation - Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for all control systems, software, programming logic, configuration changes, and system architecture. This includes ensuring all changes are thoroughly documented and comply with Management of Change administration procedures. · Project Management - Lead or support automation projects, including system upgrades, expansions, and new equipment integrations. This often involves creating or revising recipe control logic for new product introductions or existing product improvements. Responsibilities include developing project scope, timelines, and budgets, and managing external contractors as needed. · Training - Provide technical guidance and training to maintenance and operations personnel on new or modified control systems.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Minimum Qualifications
Basic qualifications : 3-5+ years of experience working as an Automation or Controls Engineer in a manufacturing environment, preferably in specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or food and beverage.
Demonstrated proficiency with the Emerson DeltaV DCS.
Strong understanding of P&ID's, control loop tuning, advanced process control, and process control theory.
Solid knowledge of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) principles and their application in process industries.
Familiarity with process safety management (PSM) principles and Management of Change (MOC) processes.
Ability to read and revise single line diagrams, loop diagrams, sequence charts, and interlock tables.
Prefer: · Emerson Delta V configuration experience including, batch and continuous programs, graphic displays, and historian. Proficiency in using OSIsoft PI System components, specifically PI Vision, for data visualization, trending, and dashboard development.
A demonstrated understanding of; technical codes (IEE, ANSI, NFPA, IEC, etc.), instrument and electrical specifications, safety, and environmental regulations.
· Chemical process knowledge including technical understanding of chemical engineering principles such as liquid/vapor equilibrium, reaction kinetics, and control of exothermic reactions
Educational Requirements:
B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
