Technical Writer – Process Engineer - Data Center Operational Readiness
We are looking for an experienced Technical Writer – Process Engineer – with a strong background in data center operations, engineering and maintenance, for a next-generation, High-Performance Compute Center (HPCC) in the Greenville/Spartanburg region of South Carolina.
As the Technical Writer – Process Engineer, you will be responsible for developing, organizing, and maintaining a comprehensive library of operational documentation, including Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Method of Procedures MOPs), Emergency Operations Procedures EOPs), Emergency Response Plans, Incident Management Protocols, Program Standards and best-practices. This role requires technical acumen and exceptional writing skills, with the ability to translate complex operational and engineering processes into clear, structured documentation.
Key Responsibilities - What You’ll Own:
Author and Engineer Documentation
- Develop and maintain accurate, detailed SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs for critical facility operations (electrical, mechanical, controls, Power Generation Systems and fire and life safety systems.
- Collaborate with site engineering, operations, and OEMs to document complex procedures and system workflows.
- Engineer step-by-step procedures using appropriate risk analysis and operational logic.
- Document maintenance and emergency procedures for direct liquid cooling (DLC), coolant distribution units (CDUs), rear door heat exchangers (RDHXs), and technical/process water systems.
- Create and maintain water chemistry and contamination response documentation, including flushing protocols and isolation procedures.
Power Resiliency and Energy Systems
- Author SOPs and EOPs for high-availability electrical systems, including natural gas generators, gas turbines, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS).
Commissioning and Operational Readiness Support
- Support facility transition from construction to operations by producing pre-commissioning, commissioning, and integrated systems test (IST) documentation.
- Engineer procedures for first-day-of-operations (FDOP) readiness, equipment acceptance, and initial operating procedures (IOPs).
Work Rules and Maintenance Governance
- Develop site-specific work rules governing LOTO, energized work, confined space, hot work, and other high-risk activities in accordance with EH&S policies.
- Define documentation standards for preventative maintenance (PM), Corrective Maintenance (CM), and Emergency Maintenance (EM) workstreams.
Framework and Reference Library Management
- Build and maintain a centralized reference library framework for operational documentation
- Organize documents using metadata, version control, and indexing standards suitable for high-availability environments.
- Establish taxonomy and folder hierarchies for easy search, retrieval, and governance.
Training and Operational Readiness Integration
- Translate procedures into training content to support operator Qual Card, simulation, and tabletop drills.
- Create job performance aids, quick-reference guides, and visual workflows for field use.
Continuous Improvement and Auditing
- Participation in operational audits, mock drills, and inspections to identify documentation gaps and procedural improvement opportunities.
- Track regulatory changes and industry best practices to keep procedural documentation current and compliant.
Emergency and Compliance Programs
- Draft and maintain comprehensive emergency response plans and incident management protocols.
- Support the development of site-specific and corporate-level data center work rules and policies
- Ensure alignment with TIA-942, NFPA, ASHRAE, OSHA, and ISO standards
Process Engineering and Continuous Improvement
- Review, revise, and optimize operational workflows for efficiency, safety, and risk mitigation
- Participate in Root Cause Analysis and incident review to update procedures post-incident.
- Support internal audits, commissioning efforts, and change management activities by documents and updating procedural workflows.
Stakeholder Collaboration
- Interface with Facilities, Security, EH&S, and IT operations teams to capture cross-functional procedures.
- Facilitate reviews and approvals of operational documentation by SMEs, stakeholders, and leadership.
Qualifications:
- 5 – 10 years of experience in data center operations, maintenance, or engineering roles (mechanical, electrical, or controls focus).
- Demonstrated expertise writing SOPs, MOPs, and EOPs in mission-critical environments.
- Strong familiarity with mission-critical systems including generators, UPS, switchgear, CRAC/CRAH, BMS/EPMS/SCADA, and clean agent fire systems.
- Working knowledge of regulatory and industry frameworks (TIA-942, NFPA 70/75, ASHRAE TC 9.9, and OSHA.
- Expert level Proficiency with document control systems and Microsoft Office Suite Products
- Excellent technical writing and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Technical Writing, or related discipline.
- Prior experience developing emergency plans and incident management programs in a hyperscale or enterprise data center environment
- Experience with structured content tools (DITA, XML, Adobe FrameMaker, etc.)
- Familiarity with commissioning processes, O&M turnover, and facility startup
- documentation.

Work Environment
- Role will be based at a mission-critical high performance compute center
- Role is on-site and based in Spartanburg, South Carolina
- Skilled in incident response, RCA, and emergency operating procedures (EOPs) in high-availability environments.
- Proficiency in maintenance management systems - advanced CMMS, Digital Twin Simulation, Benchmarking, Asset Management, work order platforms, and reporting tools such as Smartsheet, FM Systems, Maximo and MCIM.
- Excellent communication skills with ability to interface across executive leadership, engineering teams, IT stakeholders, and third-party vendors.
- Degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Business Administration, or related field.
- PMP, PE, CFM, Uptime Accredited Tier Designer, Certified TIA-942 Design Consultant, or equivalent professional certifications.
- Direct experience managing hyperscale, HPC, AI-enabled, or Tier IV data center environments.
- Demonstrated success leading brownfield redevelopment, facility retrofits, or complex infrastructure transitions.
- Knowledge of or experience with liquid cooling technologies, CDUs, or emerging AI/data center cooling systems.
- Familiarity with LEAN, Six Sigma, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong command of ITIL, ISO 27001, SOC 2, NIST, or TIA-942 compliance frameworks
- Experience establishing and managing enterprise-level CMMS systems, work order workflows, and performance reporting dashboards.
- Prior responsibility for multi-site or global facility portfolios and associated team structures.
- Proven record of accomplishment in mentoring technical leaders, building operational training programs, and fostering high-performance team culture.
- Verifiable, proven, Experience supporting construction-to-operations (C2O) transitions, IST, and final commissioning deliverables.
Location: Greenville / Spartanburg Region of South Carolina Required / On-Site
Travel Expectations: Less than 10% domestic, on-demand travel with overnight stay, may be necessary and expected in this role.
