The Systems Engineer is responsible for the technical planning, system integration, requirements definition, and verification and validation of system functions, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. The position will also be responsible for the development of solutions based on customer needs in support of the Sales and Business Development teams. The position is based in Reston Virginia will be a mix of in office and remote telework unless the employee is out with an authorized absence or business travel.
The Systems Engineer will work alongside a department of engineers with varying disciplines that create custom communications solutions and products for niche customer requirements primarily in the DoD market often integrating satellite communications backhaul capability with associated IP routing/switching equipment. Product development support will be performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. The Systems Engineering department will ensure the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints. Perform functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications. The Director will manage staff resources, the associated Engineering budget, and determine priorities for the group.
Systems Engineers will also be expected to support proposal efforts. Responsibilities for proposal response include requirements analysis, solution design, and written response of the proposed solution. In addition, the Systems Engineer will be responsible for the creation of a detailed bill of materials outlining the all aspects of the solution
A strong background with over 10 years of experience in satellite communications, IP routing and switching, and Systems Engineering is required. Preferred formal education in Electrical Engineering. Minimum DOD SECRET security clearance required; TS/SCI preferred. Travel can be expected, up to 30% on average and include both foreign and domestic travel. A valid Passport and Driver’s License is required.
Responsibilities
Perform assigned daily operations to include solution design, project lead, and technical escalation, and customer support provide support on project planning and solution/systems development, Participate in design and technical review meetings. Develop technical plans to guide capability development; and report status of capability development activities. Provide support to overall capability through requirement definition, analysis, allocation, management and create and maintain Installation Control Documentation (ICD). Work with engineers to develop and maintain block diagrams, sequence diagrams, use cases, interface definitions, and other analysis and design artifacts to be used for design and development Support on-site customer meeting to extract custom requirements used to design custom network solutions. Support on-site and remote customer support activities to include systems integrations, technical assistance, and future systems planning Support RFP proposal efforts through PWS analysis and proposal response by generating innovative and compliant technical solutions, technical writing, and accurate build of materials. Provide network design, configuration, and implementation support for newly created solutions. Provide technical support to internal and external customers including problem troubleshooting and resolution of newly fielded solutions
Skills and Knowledge
Proficient knowledge of IP networks. Proficient in RF principles to include; understanding/interpreting Eb/No, C/N, and BER values as well as various modulation/coding techniques and understand the benefits/down falls of each Understanding of satellite network access methods (SCPC, TDMA, CDMA) Perform system architecture, development, requirements analysis, design, process execution and evaluation, selections and evaluation of COTS/GOTS tools and test integration. Experience with MPLS in a service provided environment. Strong knowledge in LAN infrastructure – VLANs, Trunking, routing protocols, etc Highly proficient with IP Subnetting Expert knowledge and understanding of TCP/IP network technologies; DNS, DHCP, TFTP, NAT, and SSL. Must have working knowledge of working with and safeguarding classified information Comfortable working alone and with a team of peers Comfortable working in a SCIF environment
Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in System Engineering, Information Systems, Engineering Science, Engineering Management, or related discipline from an accredited college or university is required. Ten (10) years of additional system engineering experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree Experience briefing management on technical solutions, cost impacts, and risks Experience in developing documentation required to support a program’s technical issues and training situations Able to apply INCOSE system engineering practices and produce system engineering documentation High Level of Expertise in Microsoft Office Suite to include Visio and Project Minimum SECRET security clearance required; TS/SCI Desired
