The Supplier Quality Engineer (SQE) role is critical in ensuring that suppliers consistently meet the maintenance of high-quality standards in the realm of manufacturing and production. Combining technical expertise with strategic oversight, SQEs act as the custodians of quality, diligently working to guarantee that every component and product provided by suppliers conforms to the company’s stringent requirements. This role involves working closely with suppliers to develop quality control processes, conducting audits, and implementing improvement plans. The SQE will liaise with various departments within the company to ensure that suppliers adhere to the required standards and specifications.
Key Areas of Responsibilities:
Ensure the quality of materials meet quality standards and customer requirements through proactive quality assurance, continuous improvement, and strong supplier relationships.
Supplier Development: Collaborate with suppliers to enhance quality management systems and ensure compliance with company standards.
Quality Audits: Conduct regular audits of suppliers to assess their quality processes and identify areas for improvement.
Continuous Improvement: Drive continuous improvement initiatives at supplier locations to reduce defects and enhance overall quality.
Problem Solving: Address and resolve quality issues through root cause analysis, corrective actions, and preventive measures.
Product Qualification: Ensure seamless supplier setup and execution of NPI material.
Cost Out: Partner with suppliers to drive cost out of products in scope.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive records of supplier performance, audits, and corrective actions.
Training: Provide training and support to suppliers on quality standards, tools, and techniques.
Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams such as procurement, engineering, and manufacturing to align supplier quality with company objectives.
Compliance: Ensure suppliers comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Reporting: Prepare and present detailed reports on supplier quality performance to management.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, specifically Mechanical or Electrical.
M.B.A. or other advanced technical degrees strongly preferred.
Quality Management degree or experience a strong plus.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in supplier quality engineering or a similar role.
Proficiency in quality management tools such as Six Sigma, FMEA, SPC, and root cause analysis.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address quality issues.
Exceptional verbal and interpersonal/written communication skills; can effectively interact with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
Ability to lead and mentor supplier teams towards achieving quality objectives.
High attention to detail to ensure precision in audits and quality assessments.
Proactive attitude towards identifying potential quality issues after they arise.
Strong ethical standards and professionalism in supplier interactions.
Creativity in developing new approaches to improve supplier quality.
Quality certifications such as Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt are a plus.
Strong PC skills (Excel, PP, Word, Access, Minitab).
Demonstrated ability to influence teams and programs regarding quality, productivity and/or customer service.
Ability to work on multiple projects with limited direction.
Overall understanding of a manufacturing company’s operations.
Maximum of 50% travel to suppliers required
