Structural Engineer
BB&E is an employee-owned, full-service civil and environmental engineering and consulting firm, headquartered in Northville, Michigan, which services both the Federal and Industrial sectors throughout the United States. BB&E team members provide Environmental Consulting, Facilities Engineering, and Program/Project Management Services to the Federal and private sectors.
Position Summary
BB&E is currently looking for a Structural Engineer to provide Structural Engineering design support services to support Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build projects and associated efforts undertaken by NAVFAC Pacific, Planning Design and Construction Directorate, Design Division (PDC4) at NAVFAC Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, HI.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Perform structural analysis and design of building vertical and lateral force resisting systems, retaining structures, utility structures, or waterfront structures (piers, wharves, etc.) using DoD UFC or industry codes and standards including the International Building Code (IBC) and ASCE 7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures; and design of structural elements using common building materials (concrete, steel, and masonry)
Coordinate with team members to execute project scope, schedules, and budgets in conformance with the project and customer requirements
Facilitate the minimization of project delays by providing technical reviews and recommendations when requested within predetermined timeframes
Research codes, guidance, policies, procedures, processes, criteria and Federal laws and regulations and provide sound technical recommendations both verbally and in writing
Apply innovative technical principles, practices and theories to the resolution of technical issues
Coordinate with the Government client, NAVFAC team members, leadership, project stakeholders, and various regulatory agencies
Coordinate and facilitate meetings, make recommendations based on project requirements, coordinate workflow processes, schedule/coordinate plans of actions and milestones (POAMs) and effectively communicate findings to project personnel; provide written minutes for all meetings
Review technical reports, RFIs, designs, design changes for both design-build and design bid build projects, project deliverables, submittals, cost proposals from contractors, etc. to ensure compliance with customer and RFP requirements
Provide technical support for the review of the commissioning plan, design and construction submittals, and field inspections
Provide technical support for the construction field activities
Provide summaries of accomplishments during weekly meetings and in a prepared monthly status report
Field investigations are excluded; no travel required
Key Qualifications
U.S. Citizenship and the ability to obtain Secret Clearance (Tier 3 preferred) is required
Certification: P.E. desired, but not required
Knowledge Demonstrated knowledge of broad-based engineering principles and versed in Structural EngineeringSound understanding of technical concepts, principles and practices applicable to multi-disciplined engineering project design
Strong Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences; demonstrated experience in preparing correspondence, written reports, and in briefing management personnel
Software: Proficiency using AutoCAD and/or Revit, etc. and MS Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; ability to adapt to new software such as eCMS, MS Teams and Zoom may also be necessary
Experience & Education
Experience: A minimum of 10 years of Design Management and/or Design experience; demonstrated experience performing structural analysis and design of building vertical and lateral force resisting systems, retaining structures, utility structures, or waterfront structures (piers, wharves, etc.) using DoD UFC or industry codes and standards including the International Building Code (IBC) and ASCE 7 Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures; and design of structural elements using common building materials (concrete, steel, and masonry)
Education: A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering with a structural focus from an accredited Engineering college
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand/walk/climb/kneel/crouch and remain in a stationary position/sit at least 60% of the time
Ability to operate office equipment, including computer, copy machine, phone, etc.
Ability to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms
Capable of lifting up to 10 lbs.
Ability to see details of objects that are less than a few feet away
Ability to understand the speech of another person, speak clearly so listeners can understand, and talk or hear both in person and by telephone
Compensation, Benefits & Perks
Salary range - $160,000-$165,000
