The Lead Structural Engineer is responsible for overseeing the discipline at a project level and managing the project discipline budget on simple to complex projects of all sizes. The Lead Engineer has a thorough understanding of the development and field implementation of documents through all project phases. The Lead Engineer is responsible for directing and managing the workflows and execution of design and engineering support staff (Entry-Level to Senior) to meet client expectations and project goals.
The Senior Structural Engineer has a thorough understanding of the development and field implementation of documents through all project phases, sizes and levels of complexity. The Senior Engineer possesses the ability to coordinate with internal and external parties, manage multiple complex tasks, establish priorities and direct the work of others.
Core Activities
Directs and manages the workflows and execution of design and engineering support staff (Entry-Level to Senior) to meet client expectations and project goals.
Coordinates with internal and external parties, manages multiple complex tasks, establishes priorities and directs the work of others.
Interfaces with clients and external partners.
Plans and directs work and manages a project budget from a discipline design perspective on large complex projects.
Works with Project Manager on proposal development, man-hour planning and project scheduling for the discipline scope of work on intermediate level projects.
Identifies and resolves intermediate non-compliant existing conditions during site walks and construction field surveys.
Develops construction drawing packages and writes construction specifications on advanced and complex projects with little oversight.
Provides lead and advanced support of construction activities such as RFI responses, submittal reviews, punch list development and construction progress reports.
Conducts quality checking of documents for intermediate complex projects (, technical verification of design calculations and documentation) and drives overall project quality.
Provides mentorship to discipline Engineer I and II and/or Designer I and II.
Leads advanced project system design programming and master planning with support from Senior Engineer.
Leads a team of discipline staff in the execution of advanced projects, discipline design and engineering.
Qualifications
ABET-accredited Bachelor’s degree in discipline-specific field
Minimum of 10 years of experience for Lead position, preferably in a design firm setting
Minimum of 15 years of experience for Senior position, preferably in a design firm setting
Proficiency in structural-specific software
Advanced experience with performing engineering calculations, and developing and implementing list of discipline systems designs
Advanced experience with the structural material codes
Intermediate experience with other applicable industry standards
Intermediate experience with applicable building codes
Proficient at advanced internal and external cross-discipline project team coordination
Proficient at coordinating with construction trade partners, vendors and manufacturers
Proficient at structural design calculations with limited supervision
Preferred Qualifications
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Revit
Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
Experience with internal discipline design and engineering training presentations
Experience with troubleshooting issues with discipline and systems
