Staff Software Engineer - NYC
New Today
Berry Street is a business-in-a-box platform enabling registered dietitians to start and scale private practices that accept health insurance. We provide all of the software needed to run a thriving practice + administrative services like insurance contracting, eligibility verification, customer support, claims billing, and even patient acquisition.
The Opportunity:
Berry Street is tackling America’s most comprehensive health crisis: food. More than half of Americans are struggling with their relationship with food, are clinically overweight, or suffer from a chronic condition linked to their diet.
Nutrition therapy is clinically proven to make a difference, and most commercial health insurance plans cover it at $0 out-of-pocket. Berry Street empowers registered dietitians to launch and grow in-network private practices. We’re creating game-changing technology to build America’s largest dietitian network and ensure that anyone can access the help they need.
Since launching in January 2023, we’ve grown to over 1,100 providers on our platform and tens of thousands of patients served, across all 50 states. We’re a Series B company backed by top VCs like Northzone, Sofina, and FJ Labs, as well as angel investors like the founders of Revolut, Spring, Grow Therapy, and Unified Vision.
This is where you come in
We’re a small team with a big mission. We move fast, solve hard problems, and take pride in building things the right way. This is a high-impact role in a fast-moving environment — you’ll work on problems that require focus, urgency, and adaptability, and you’ll see the direct impact of your work every day. If you thrive in places where growth is accelerated, ownership is real, and your decisions shape the future of the company, you’ll fit right in.
What you'll do
You’ll be steering the ship in uncharted waters, not just rowing faster — leading critical technical work that shapes our technology, product, and business direction. You’ll own cross-functional problem spaces, partnering with engineering, product, and operations to deliver high-impact projects across provider and patient experiences, core infrastructure, and marketplace systems. You’ll set technical direction, guide architecture, and keep initiatives on track. Staying hands-on where it matters most, you’ll write and review code to unblock teams, accelerate delivery, and ensure we balance speed with long-term scalability.
Requirements
Proven technical depth. 10+ years building and scaling systems that solved real problems. You've made the complex decisions and have the battle scars to prove it.
Full-stack versatility with back-end strength. Comfortable across the stack—from REST/GraphQL APIs and relational databases to modern frontend frameworks—with particular depth on the platform side.
Architectural breadth. You've designed complex systems spanning multiple technical domains and created infrastructure components that multiple teams depend on, balancing immediate needs with future flexibility.
Technical leadership in practice. You've actively shaped organizational direction by authoring technical design documents, establishing engineering standards, and participating meaningfully in quarterly planning activities.
Ambiguity navigator. You thrive in undefined spaces, creating clarity for yourself and others while remaining adaptable as requirements evolve.
Startup DNA. You understand the controlled chaos of early-stage companies and take ownership without being asked.
Product instincts. You build through a user-centric lens, naturally collaborating beyond code to shape what we build, not just how we build it.
Leadership multiplier. You elevate those around you, including senior engineers, whether through formal mentorship, establishing practices that scale beyond your team, or guiding cross-functional initiatives.
Pragmatic excellence. You balance "perfect and practical", knowing when to build for the future and when to ship for today. You're allergic to over-engineering but won't compromise on what truly matters.
