The Opportunity
This position works out of our Tech Center in Little Canada/St. Paul, MN in the EP division. In Abbott’s Electrophysiology (EP) business, we’re advancing the treatment of heart disease through breakthrough medical technologies in atrial fibrillation, allowing people to restore their health and get on with their lives. As the Staff Electrical Engineer you will be responsible for designing electromechanical medical devices in Abbott’s fast growing and highly visible Electrophysiology medical device division. This includes initiating the planning, organizing, performing, coordinating, documentation and/or directing of design testing internally and with external contract houses as necessary. Additionally, determining the layout, construction, and evaluation of a variety of prototype printed circuit assemblies, fixtures, and tools. You will apply advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical challenges within this division and perform technical studies in support of project goals. You will be a subject matter expert (SME) on all medical device standards updates, identifying and using the most effective, cost efficient, and best practices to execute processes, and continually evaluate their effectiveness and appropriateness. What You’ll Work On Performs the layout, construction, and evaluation of a variety of prototype Printed Circuit Boards, fixtures, and tools. Knowledge of how to define timing constraints in SDC format. Experience with scripting languages like TCL and Python for tool control and data analysis. Applies advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems. Initiates the planning, organizing, performing, coordinating and/or directing of engineering work, and may conduct performance evaluations or technical studies. Remains abreast of and consults on technical advancements. Identifies and routinely uses the most effective, cost efficient and best practices to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness. Lays out and constructs a variety of prototype tools and fixtures required for development purposes. Performs troubleshooting and fault isolation activities on a variety of breadboards and hybrids. Performs measurements specified in design verification plans, documents and tabulates results, and provides engineering test reports. Designing and developing digital circuits, simulating and verifying the functionality of hardware designs. Able to read, write, and simulate FPGA targeted HDL designs in SystemVerilog along with a basic understanding of UVM Verification methodologies. Documents custom tools with specifications, schematics and mechanical layouts to support document control and tool release. Complies with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations, other regulatory requirements, Company policies, operating procedures, processes, and task assignments. Maintains positive and cooperative communications and collaboration with all levels of employees, customers, contractors, and vendors. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering or other related Engineering or Physics degree 8+ years of relevant electrical engineering experience, including hands-on analog & digital circuit design experience. Project management and/or leading projects Demonstrated experience with printed circuit board design, schematic entry, and/or design simulation. Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization. Extensive understanding of processes used in the design and manufacturing of PCBA’s. Ability to travel approximately 10%, including internationally. Preferred Qualifications Medical Device product development experience Master’s in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering degree Familiarity with IEC 60601 family of standards Familiarity with Altium or other Electrical CAD tools Experience with digital logic design and HDL simulation Circuit Simulation experience Statistical analysis, or similar tool set
