As a Senior Engineer, you serve as a specialist in the engineering team that supports the product. You help develop and gain insight in the application architecture. You can distill an abstract architecture into concrete design and influence the implementation. You show expertise in applying the appropriate software engineering patterns to build robust and scalable systems. You are an expert in programming and apply your skills in developing the product. You have the skills to design and implement the architecture on your own, but choose to influence your fellow engineers by proposing software designs, providing feedback on software designs and/or implementation. You show good problem solving skills and can help the team in triaging operational issues. You leverage your expertise in eliminating repeat occurrences.
As a Senior engineer on the Backbone Network team, you will build, run, and automate the Backbone Network at Target, which is used by Team Members and Guests every day. This will include deploying new tech to the field, improving the experience of users connected to the network, and ensuring the smooth operations of our existing network. You will join a group of engineers who are passionate about building the best possible experience for our users. This will include a mix of traditional networking and developing software to continuously improve the experience.
Use your skills to support our 2000+ locations and solving challenging network problems at scale. Automation and reliability are critical to providing a great experience for Guests and Team members in an environment of this size. You will join a team that owns the Backbone WAN from the edge through our centralized data centers. This includes designing, supporting and automating our network. The team is also moving from a legacy platform to a modern SD-WAN platform and you will be a key part of that transition.

Use your technology acumen to apply and maintain knowledge of current and emerging technologies within specialized area(s) of the technology domain. Evaluate new technologies and participate in decision-making, accounting for several factors such as viability within Target's technical environment, maintainability, and cost of ownership. Initiate and execute research and proof-of-concept activities for new technologies. Manage total product, financials and forecasting. Lead the design, lifecycle management, and total cost of ownership of services. Lead and conduct code review, design review, testing, and debugging activities at the application level. Lead functional design and architecture discussions with understanding of process flows and system diagrams to enable design decisions. Participate in routine and non-routine construction, automation, and implementation activities, ensuring successful implementation with architectural and operational requirements and best practices met. Provide technical oversight and coach others to resolve complex and severe technical issues. Lead disaster recovery activities and contribute to disaster recovery planning. Embed data quality protocols throughout data acquisition, processing, storage, and operational use.

About you:
4-year degree or equivalent experience
5+ years of network engineering and/or software engineering experience
Experience with Versa SD-WAN is preferred but not required
Cisco Routers, Cradlepoint Cellular devices and Virtual routers are a plus
Knowledge of technologies including Python, Linux, BGP and WAN technology
Demonstrates and familiarity with current and emergent technologies in the network space, such as open-source networking, SD-WAN, private and public networks and working with carriers for internet connectivity.
Writes and organizes code using at least one programming language
Enjoys working within a team of engineers in a collaborative environment.
Experience with supporting a technology platform, including examples of deep diving to solve novel issues in production.
Knowledge of infrastructure components (e.g. networking, cloud services, orchestration tools, containerization, compute, and storage systems) preferred
Maintains technical knowledge within areas of expertise, curious about learning and understanding new tech.
Stays current with new and evolving technologies via formal training and self-directed education
Enthusiastic about the intersection between software and network platforms, emphasizing how to use scripting, virtualization, and automation to deploy and support the platform.
