JOB TITLE: Senior Substation Engineer DEPARTMENT: Engineering REPORTS TO: Supervising Engineer CLASSIFICATION: Exempt POSITION OVERVIEW: The Senior Substation Engineer performs engineering and design duties as well as organizes all activities required for the development and implementation of high voltage electrical substation projects to ensure they are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with all relevant regulations and standards. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in substation relay & control design and/or physical electrical design, with extensive experience in high voltage substation projects 115kV and above. What You’ll Do: Ensure that projects are managed to meet project quality, schedule and profitability objectives. Supervise and coordinate all project activities to ensure on-time completion. Assign tasks to project design team based on project needs. Work with project team to create or modify all design documents. Ensure project team is using project specific standards and that the design effort is progressing in the most efficient manner possible. Develop one line diagrams, electrical plans, and specifications for a project. Apply engineering application software to complete tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, etc. Perform engineering and design functions as necessary to meet project schedules. Communicate and coordinate project activities with customer representatives, project team, and management. Prepare, coordinate, and track project schedules and budgets, and ensure projects remain within allotted budgets and schedules and address deviations with management. Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI. Properly use the document management system. Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work. Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party. Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments. Other duties as required. What You’ll Bring: Required Experience and Education Minimum of 7 years’ experience in the electric utility industry performing detailed engineering for high voltage substation projects. Bachelor of Science degree (B.S.) or Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university. Successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam. P.E. license or attainable within 18 months of employment. Strong technical expertise in structural, civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering, with a comprehensive understanding of engineering principles and practices. Knowledge of electric utility engineering and construction standards. Knowledge of design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project. Strong understanding of industry specific software packages. Demonstrated experience supporting external customers. Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams, clients, and external partners. Knowledge of relevant industry codes, standards, and regulations, including ANSI, ASTM, ACI, AISC, IEEE, NEC, NESC, and others. Able to deal with ambiguity and ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks and determine priorities in a complex environment. Travel Requirements: Role will require travel as necessary to achieve job responsibilities, up to 5-10% of the time.
