GEICO is seeking an experienced Senior Staff Engineer with a passion for building high-performance, low maintenance, zero-downtime platforms and applications. You will help drive our insurance business transformation as we transition from a traditional IT model to a tech organization with engineering excellence as its mission, while co-creating a culture of psychological safety and continuous improvement.
Position Description
Our Senior Staff Engineer works with our Distinguished Engineer and Staff Engineers to design, deploy, and maintain OpenStack-based environments. You will help lead the automation of cloud operations, support containerization initiatives, and optimize our CI/CD pipelines. The ideal candidate has deep technical expertise in OpenStack, Python, infrastructure deployment automation, and containerization technologies.
Position Responsibilities
Design, deploy, and manage OpenStack-based cloud environments
Develop and maintain automation scripts and playbooks using Python, Ansible, and GitHub Workflows
Implement and optimize CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application delivery
Support containerization initiatives (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
Troubleshoot and resolve issues in cloud and automation workflows
Collaborate with development, operations, and security teams
Share best practices and improve processes within and across teams
Participate in on-call and operational support as needed
Qualifications
Proficiency in Python programming and scripting
Strong experience with Ansible for automation and configuration management
Proven experience with OpenStack administration and operations
Hands-on experience with CI/CD tools and workflows (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, GitLab CI)
Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
Experience with infrastructure as code and deployment automation
Good understanding of networking and security best practices in cloud deployments
Experience with monitoring, logging, and alerting in cloud environments
Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Strong communication and collaboration abilities
Experience with open-source tools such as Git, Terraform, and Prometheus / Grafana is a plus
Knowledge of developer tooling across the software development life cycle
Experience
8+ years of professional experience in cloud engineering, platform administration, or infrastructure automation
8+ years of experience with OpenStack or similar cloud platforms
8+ years of experience with Python and Ansible
8+ years of experience with CI/CD systems and containerization technologies
Experience with hybrid or multi-cloud environments (AWS, GCP, Azure, or on-premises) is a plus
Experience with low-level virtualization technologies (QEMU / libvirt) is a plus
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or equivalent education or work experience
