Reporting to Executive staff in the Division of Technical Affairs and Code Development, the Senior Mechanical Systems Engineer will work on mechanical code-related issues, and on various technical subject matters. The individual, with minimum supervision, is responsible for:
-Researching and reviewing the use of mechanical appliances, devices, and materials not otherwise approved for use by the NYC Mechanical Code. - Preparing mechanical system descriptions, narratives of design alternatives, code interpretations, and other similar technical reports. - Reviewing requests related to standards like ASHRAE 62.1, ASHRAE 15, ASHRAE 15.2, ASHRAE 34 and ASHRAE 90.1. - Attending meetings with industry stakeholders, city agencies and/or elected officials and their staff regarding electrical code equipment and installation. - Researching complex technical issues and responding to inquiries submitted by engineers and architects with regards to the NYC Mechanical Code, NYC Construction Codes, and other standards, often under tight deadlines. - Researching and reviewing applicable referenced design standards, codes, and other related laws and rules. - Leading meeting with members of the industry to provide technical assistance of a complex nature. - Planning, assigning and reviewing of projects assigned to other mechanical engineers in the Engineering unit.
REMOTE WORK This position may be eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week, pursuant to the Remote Work Pilot Program.
CIVIL SERVICE STATUS Only permanent Administrative Engineers, applicants who are reachable on the Administrative Engineer open competitive list, and applicants as indicated below will be considered.
Candidates who are permanent in comparable civil service titles may be considered for title change under rule 6.1.9 of the Personnel Rules and Regulations of the City of New York.
ADMINISTRATIVE ENGINEER -
Minimum Qualifications 1. A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer and six years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, at least two years of which must have been in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.
Preferred Skills - Candidates must have experience in high pressure (3,-15, psig) system design. - Candidates must have experience in pressure relief valve sizing and system design. - Candidates must possess design skills and knowledge of connector materials, their properties and manufacturing methods. - Candidates must have experience in designing air distribution systems, hydronic systems, automatic temperature controls systems, and calculating cooling/heating loads. - Candidates who possess knowledge in the requirements of the New York City Construction Codes will be given priority consideration. - Candidates must possess knowledge of mechanical engineering principles to facilitate developing code provisions. - Candidate must demonstrate excellent communication, organizational, writing and analytical skills. - Candidate must possess the ability to write complex technical issues in a clear and concise manner. - Candidate must demonstrate ability to multi-task and manage deadlines in a fast-paced environment. 55a Program This position is also open to qualified persons with a disability who are eligible for the 55-a Program.
