This role is a key member of the Compute and Data Infrastructure team, responsible for designing, implementing, and managing scalable storage systems that support the University’s enterprise and research initiatives across two on-premise data centers and a colocation facility in Boston. The position focuses on Fiber Channel and NFS-based storage, integrated with vSphere environments and supporting a broad base of direct NFS customers. Responsibilities include storage automation, performance optimization, documentation, and ensuring reliable backup and recovery processes. The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience with enterprise storage platforms such as ONTAP, SnapMirror, and SnapCenter; deep knowledge of NFS and FC protocols; and proficiency in scripting languages like PowerShell or C#. Success in this role requires close collaboration with vendors and internal teams to deliver secure, high-performing, and resilient storage infrastructure aligned with University needs. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree or four (4+) plus years of experience in computing technology or equivalent combination of experience and education.
Experience in integration of on-premises and cloud-based computing infrastructures.
Skills and Knowledge Extensive hands-on experience with enterprise storage systems (e.g., ONTAP, SnapMirror, SnapCenter, SanNAV).
Proficiency in virtualization environments and integration of storage with virtual infrastructure (e.g., vSphere, Hyper-V).
Strong scripting/automation skills (e.g., PowerShell, C#, Ansible) for operational efficiency and scalability.
Demonstrated success in vendor evaluation, negotiation, and contract management.
Familiarity with storage security, compliance frameworks, and disaster recovery planning.
Demonstrated experience conducting root cause analysis
Familiarity with cloud storage technologies
Responsibilities Design, implement and support scalable enterprise storage solutions (SAN/NFS) that ensure high availability, optimal performance, and data integrity.
Lead architecture and optimization initiatives for storage infrastructure supporting both enterprise operations and research computing environments.
Administer and optimize storage systems using Fiber Channel and NFS protocols while ensuring seamless integration with virtualization platforms.
Collaborate with colleagues and groups across compute, backup, disaster recovery, research computing, and networking to deliver reliable, end-to-end infrastructure performance.
Monitor and analyze storage system performance to identify and resolve bottlenecks, hardware failures, and interoperability issues.
Troubleshoot complex issues and perform detailed root cause analyses.
Ensure high availability and resiliency through proactive diagnostics, system tuning, and remediation of technical challenges.
Develop and maintain automation scripts and infrastructure-as-code solutions to support efficient storage provisioning, monitoring, and reporting.
Enhance operational efficiency, scalability, and consistency through the use of automation processes and configurations.
Collaborate with vendors and leadership to evaluate storage technologies, inform technical decision-making, and support procurement planning.
Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation and operational standards to ensure consistent and reliable enterprise storage practices.
Proactively monitor and assess emerging industry trends and advancements in storage solutions to guide innovation and maintain best-in-class practices.
