Job Title: Civil Engineer Under general supervision, performs complex technical engineering work in the design and completion of construction, engineering, drainage/flood control, and other Public Works infrastructure projects. Manages large or complex engineering projects and performs related duties. Works under the general supervision of the Assistant City Engineer; does not exercise supervisory responsibility. Distinguishing Characteristics This is the advanced journey level class within the Professional Engineering series. Employees are distinguished from lower-level Associate Engineers by managing large or complex projects and performing the full range of duties with minimal guidance. Employees are knowledgeable of operating procedures and policies and handle new or unusual situations independently. Essential Functions The following are critical, integral, and primary duties of the role. Employees possessing the requisite skills, experience, and education are expected to perform these with or without reasonable accommodations. This list is not exhaustive, and additional duties may be assigned. Manage assigned projects, resolve discrepancies, and recommend solutions for complex problems. Coordinate, prepare, review engineering reports, calculations, plans, and specifications in accordance with standards and codes. Analyze proposed projects structurally and technically; evaluate need for changes and review plans for compliance with codes and regulations. Perform drafting, calculations, and data review for roadway, flood control, and infrastructure projects. Conduct field tests, take samples, and inspect sites to ensure quality and compliance with safety standards. Respond to inquiries from citizens and agencies regarding projects and plans. Maintain records related to engineering projects. Interpret and explain technical specifications, regulations, and standards. Write technical reports and estimates related to civil engineering projects. Perform other related duties as assigned. Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and five (5) years of responsible civil engineering experience, preferably with a municipal or government agency, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Licenses and Certifications Valid California Class C Driver’s License. Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) by the California Board for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
