About the position:

As a member of E Ink’s Process Development Team, the Senior Chemical Process Systems Engineer will be entrusted with fulfilling our mission of bringing smart displays to the world. This role is responsible for creating, improving, and maintaining pilot-scale systems that enable commercial-scale production of E Ink’s unique electrophoretic materials – including pigments, colloidal dispersions, microcapsules, and other additives.

We’re looking for someone who can help us build what we need, but also someone who can figure out what we should be building in the first place. This candidate will have experience designing and building specialized equipment and will be excited to drive equipment-based innovation across the organization!

Responsibilities

  • Design new process systems. Create PFDs, evaluate alternative technologies, generate P&IDs, perform engineering calculations, draft fabrication drawings, work with outside vendors to select and customize process equipment, select components, and size lines
  • Lead the installation of new process systems in collaboration with both internal and external teams
  • Act as a companywide technical resource on process equipment such as reactor vessel design, pumps, mixers, temperature control systems, and sensors
  • Evaluate, select, and communicate with all relevant third-party vendors (piping, controls, etc.) required for the design and installation of new process equipment
  • Perform hands-on assembly, modification, commissioning, and troubleshooting of new and existing pilot-scale chemical process systems
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to coordinate capabilities within Development and Research departments, communicate support needs to Facilities department, and ensure responsiveness to EHS requirements

Qualifications

  • BS or MS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience
  • 7+ years of industrial process systems engineering experience
  • Ability to read P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and fabrication drawings
  • Experience sizing and selecting chemical fluid lines, pumps, valves, and instrumentation
  • Basic electrical knowledge to read wiring diagrams and troubleshoot low voltage circuitry
  • Working knowledge of process automation (P&ID controllers, instrumentation, transmitters, VFDs, PLCs)
  • Experience troubleshooting processes and equipment
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on attitude
  • Clear and effective communication skills
  • Ability to function effectively as a member of cross-functional, cross-disciplinary, and inter-corporate teams
  • Effective prioritization and time management to meet project goals / milestones

Preferred skills

  • Experience designing pressure vessels that comply with ASME BPVC
  • Experience commissioning new process equipment
  • Experience with mixer design
  • AutoCad proficiency
  • LabVIEW proficiency
  • Working knowledge of industrial codes (NFPA, NEC, ASME)
  • Basic SolidWorks and 3D printing skills
  • Experience operating machining equipment such as drill presses and lathes
  • Basic project management skills such as creating budgets, timelines, and updates on multiple small projects
  • Familiarity with Six Sigma / statistical analysis methods
  • Knowledge of typical fabrication methods
