Job Brief The Resident Engineer will support Circuit Emulation enabled legacy network transformation projects. This is a hands-on, engineering-focused role ideal for candidates with experience in multi-vendor environments and a strong foundation in Layer 1 through Layer 3 technologies in addition to legacy SONET Networks. You’ll work as a technical consultant, contributing to the design, testing, implementation, and migration of mission-critical networks. This role offers the opportunity to work with a high-tech networking lab, travel, and collaborate with some of the industry’s leading transport and automation experts. The Resident Engineer position is a full-time role with an in-office presence in the Portland area at a Customer location. This role may additionally require up to 25% travel.
Responsibilities Collaborate with project teams to implement complex Layer 1–3 network solutions for primarily service provider and utility customers Work directly with clients to develop the strategies and procedures required to efficiently migrate thousands of mission-critical control circuits at scale Design, build, and validate network solutions in both lab environments and live production networks Create detailed technical documentation such as MOPs, test plans, network diagrams, and training materials Participate in interoperability and integration efforts across multi-vendor platforms (routing, switching, optical, and access) Support occasional onsite customer deployments, testing, and turn-up activities Contribute to internal documentation, configuration standards, and knowledge sharing across teams
Requirements Hands-on experience with the Nokia Service Router Portfolio and specifically Circuit Emulation (Cpipe, pseudowire, SAToP, CESoPSN) Functional knowledge of SONET/SDH networking including SONET Multiplexing Hierarchy, Digital Signal Cross-Connect (DSX) Equipment, Channel Banks (Mux/Demux), and Digital Access Cross-Connect Systems (DACS) Strong foundational understanding of routing and switching protocols (IGPs, BGP, MPLS, Segment Routing, Dot1q, etc.) Comfort working independently in remote lab or customer environments and with remote teams Comfort working on highly available, mission critical live customer transport networks Consulting or systems integration experience is a plus Preferred vendor certifications: Nokia: NRS I, NRS II, SRA, Nokia’s Fixed Network Certifications: FNP (Fixed Networks Professional), FNAAS (Fixed Networks Altiplano Administration Specialist) Juniper: JNCIS, JNCIP, JNCIE Ciena: CRS-P 4+ years of packet network configurations and troubleshooting experience with the general architecture requirements for Carrier Ethernet and MPLS networks Bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Engineering, or related field preferred
