Job Title: Resident Engineer
Job Description
The Resident Engineer will be responsible for overseeing two NYC Parks Department projects across the city. This role involves managing the reconstruction of city sidewalks and ensuring the health of trees. The position requires excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact effectively with contractors and clients. The engineer will review contract line items and oversee services such as saw cutting, excavation, planting, concrete restoration, and ensuring punch list items are addressed.
Responsibilities
Visit multiple sites a day, sometimes up to 10, depending on workflow.
Manage small and large contractors on city streets and in parks.
Communicate effectively with clients and contractors.
Review contract line items and ensure services are completed to standards.
Receive site locations via email from the Project Manager.
Meet the superintendent at the job site by 7 AM.
Observe and ensure contractor compliance with project specifications.
Coordinate with the Project Manager to ensure sufficient staffing.
Ensure safety measures are in place, including contractors wearing PPE.
Record and track measurements for pay items based on trees planted and excavation.
Work closely with the Parks Department and contractors.
Ensure all activities are conducted at land level, not climbing or on active roadways.
Essential Skills
Associate's degree in forestry, arboriculture, horticulture, or related plant science field; or construction project management and/or civil engineering with 2 years of relevant experience.
Bachelor's degree with 1 year of experience or Master's degree with 6 months of experience.
3+ years of experience in related work such as tree protection, pruning, installation, and establishment, or other construction services.
Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Experience in performing daily field reporting and construction oversight tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Knowledge of plant species.
Experience working with a landscaper for several years or summers.
Work Environment
The role involves working across the five boroughs of New York City, primarily on Parks Department projects. You will most likely be tied to one borough. The work hours are from 7 AM to 3 PM. The position requires traveling to various job sites, so having a vehicle is necessary. The work is conducted at ground level, ensuring safety and compliance with project specifications.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $28.00 - $35.00/hr.
