Job Summary
The Protection & Controls Substation Project Engineer is a mid-level, part-time, contract position that is fully remote. The role involves leading projects in electrical substation protection and control design, working alongside experienced electrical engineers and mentoring entry-level engineers. Duties / Responsibilities
Create and modify design documents and drawings, including one-lines, three-lines, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay panel arrangements, specifications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, and bills of material.
Design auxiliary AC and DC power systems.
Develop SCADA systems and communication interfaces.
Collaborate with project teams for system integration of protection, control, and monitoring systems.
Perform calculations such as relay burden, voltage drop, and short circuit analysis.
Conduct relay coordination studies and set relay parameters.
Communicate effectively with Project Managers, clients, designers, and drafters.
Drive company vehicle for substation site visits.
Coordinate and possibly deliver materials to project sites.
Serve as the technical point of contact with clients.
Engage in multi-discipline engineering tasks.
Manage project work from a technical perspective.
Review engineering aspects of projects.
Prepare project cost estimates and proposals.
Conduct site walk-downs independently to scope project requirements.
Supervisory Responsibilities
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
Required Skills and Abilities
Strong understanding of the utility substation project lifecycle.
Excellent technical communication and attention to detail.
Comfortable with teaching, training, and mentoring team members.
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
Engineering Technology degrees considered with relevant industry experience.
Professional Engineering License (PE) required; MS Engineering preferred.
Minimum of 6 years experience in relay protection and control design for high voltage (15-500 kV) substations.

Salary
$80.00 - $99.75 per hour
