Principal Electrical Engineer

We are searching for a driven Principal Electrical Engineer to participate in our company’s expansion and growth. This position provides the opportunity to utilize your extensive knowledge, experience, existing professional contacts, and relationships to identify and pursue projects in the public and private sector. You will provide technical leadership in critical emerging technologies and industries including but not limited to Power Systems, Data Centers, and Industrial Manufacturing. The successful candidate will be working on several programs simultaneously with different customers and end item applications. Additionally, the candidate may be responsible for leading Integrated Product Teams and may be required to interface with designers, product development engineering, Electronic Computer Aided Design (ECAD) function, chief engineering, program management, and other disciplines to drive delivery within an approved budget and schedule. This role will also perform and/or assist in various engineering tasks, supporting programs across the product lifecycle and will play a critical role in driving project execution while meeting both internal and external customer expectations. This position will require interaction with our customers including but not limited to attending meetings (virtual and/or on site), conducting presentations, responding to technical inquiries, and others as required. You will collaborate with clients and internal teams to identify project requirements, develop specifications, and for the implementation, testing, commissioning, and qualifying of provided solutions. You will stay abreast of emerging technology, systems, and software to provide quality solutions that meet and/or exceed client requirements and expectations.
In this role, you’ll also be responsible for researching, designing, developing, testing, or producing reports based in your advanced knowledge of electrical principles, theories, and concepts and contribute to development of new methods of adapting technological solutions to meet complex requirements and contributing to national security. Some areas of focus include:
Program Management: Collaborate with project managers for project scope definition, schedule, and budget requirements. Manage a multi project workload designing and overseeing the work of other engineers. The successful candidate may be accountable for project coordination and quality, as well as budget adherence, and overall team communication. Verify designer's work quality regarding specifications, reports, code application, submittal review, equipment selection, deliverables, and drawings. Encourage collaboration between staff and subcontractors to seek the best solutions for the client. Ability to establish and maintain good business relationships with key client contacts throughout the project.
Leadership: Demonstrate strong leadership abilities and organizational skills. Lead, mentor, develop and encourage existing staff in their assigned responsibilities. Supervise and monitor staff ensuring that engineering packages are completed on time and within budget
Design: Analyze, design and produce engineering packages for clients and prepare instrumentation specifications in accordance with the scope of work and all applicable regulations and codes. Review, check and analyze design drawings prior to client submittals.
Power Systems: Utilize your experience with Medium & High voltage power distribution system design and layout, substation design, short circuit analysis, ARC flash studies, grounding and lightning protection systems design, electrical heat trace design, and development of wiring diagrams and schematics. May participate in projects that require knowledge and experience with the application of medium to low voltage transformers, uninterruptible power systems, conduit, cable tray and underground duct bank design. Lead efforts involving utility interface design, electrical calculations including short circuit, load flow, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic, device coordination and voltage drop. Driving our team’s delivery of energy system design services to clients focused on increasing energy resilience by analyzing and developing solutions to energy resilience gaps potentially involving the integration of resources into microgrids, advanced nuclear reactors, hydrogen storage and fuel cell generation, chemical and physical energy storage, DC transmission and distribution systems, and distributed resource integration.
Manufacturing: Create plans to maintain and improve automation processes to enhance efficiency and productivity. Assist in validation and testing of instrumentation and controls systems. Create documentation, specifications, and recommendations for new and existing equipment. Draft and execute validation protocols to test and challenge automation processes. Utilize your firm understanding of PLC ladder logic to help write new programs for automated systems and develop work instructions for operators interfacing with automated equipment.
Data Centers: Design and develop electrical systems for data centers, including power distribution, backup power, and grounding systems. Perform load calculations, fault analysis, and power quality assessments to ensure optimal performance and reliability. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, IT professionals, and facility managers, to integrate electrical systems with other data center components. Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations, such as NEC, IEEE, and local building codes.
Instrumentation & Controls: Develops schematics detailing control system configuration and wiring, and design equipment panel layouts. Lead efforts to architect and specify control system designs and give work direction to technicians creating the drawings. Preparation of electrical, instrumentation, and PLC control panel specifications for purchase of materials and equipment and/or the solicitations of labor. Review of fabricator and external design drawings, documentation and fabrication sequence. Leading efforts on electrical and control system integration projects for clients across multiple industries including life sciences.
Business Development: Develop white papers and technical documentation of new or special case designs, studies, etc., to support the firm's technical knowledge Management (TKM). Collaborate with the business development team to create proposals in response to current and potential client requests for proposal (RFPs). Review draft proposals for adherence to firm, industry, state, local and federal regulations and best practices. Meet with current and potential future clients to review their current and future design needs.
