Optical Systems Engineer

Design and analysis of optical systems, including opto-mechanical mounting. Review designs from optical consultants for performance, manufacturing, etc. Perform tolerance analysis of designs at the system and subsystem level. Conduct system level integration and validation of designs (testing and troubleshooting). Drive full documentation of mechanical design including BOM, drawings and procedures. Oversee and coordinate activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electro-mechanical products and systems. Support the evaluation and characterization of optical components and system integrations. Collaborate with the cross-functional team to explore concepts and drive optical system development to meet product requirements. Drive supplier choice, interaction, and management in order to deliver prototypes in support of concept demonstrations. Alignment of laser and/or optical systems. Measure laser properties and optical performance to ensure product specifications are met. Development of test procedures and test stations. Support the optical engineering and system engineering leads with the opto-mechanical system design.

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience. 3+ years of experience in mechanical systems design and development using at least one standard commercial CAD software package (Solidworks, Creo, etc) including experience with GD&T, FEA and quality detail drawing documentation. Experience in design of opto-mechanical systems, familiar with optics mounting and optical alignment. Experience in applied research and/or product development of optics or photonic systems.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with one or more of the following optics technologies: illumination, radiometry/photometry, stray light analysis, physical optics, or imaging. Understanding of optical alignment techniques and experience with design of laser systems and alignment procedures. Experience with design tools and fixtures to aid in alignment, fabrication, gluing, and assembly of lasers, interferometers, and optical components. Hands-on and laboratory experience in building, testing, validation, and troubleshooting of optical, electrical, and/or mechanical subsystems. Experience with working CM/OEM/ODM vendors. Experience with using glass, plastic and ceramic materials. Familiarity with optical design principles and ray tracing. Proficient in tolerance analysis and error budgeting. Self-motivated and self-directed individual, with little supervision necessary. Experience working, communicating, and collaborating in a cross-functional team environment. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Hands-on experience with machining and fabrication for prototyping hardware. Experience defining system performance and component specifications.
