Responsibilities This position resides in the NCS Field Support group. The Field Support group focuses on Production requested work, reviews every fissile process annually to ensure it is within the safety analysis, and provides response to abnormal conditions.
NCS field engineers may initiate modifications to criticality safety evaluations (CSEs), resolve noncompliances/discrepancies, and perform verifications and validations to revised CSEs.
NCS engineers in the group spend significant time in nuclear facilities and interact with operators, management, other engineering/safety disciplines, and federal oversight.
Candidates with no prior NCS experience will enter a 1-2 year qualification program to obtain necessary technical skills.
Qualifications Bachelor's degree in engineering/physical science with a 3.0/4.0 GPA OR a Master's degree in engineering/physical science with no experience and a 3.3/4.0 GPA OR a PhD in engineering/physical science with no experience and a 3.5 GPA.
There is a minimum GPA requirement up to 4 years post-graduation at time of offer; beyond four years of graduation, engineering experience will supersede GPA.
Must meet DOE O 426.2A requirements (engineer or related scientific major, and nuclear experience or DOE alternative). New hires will not be assigned duties impacting the safety basis of nuclear facilities until DOE 426.2A requirements are satisfied.
Preferred Special Requirements Nuclear Engineering degree or graduate from US Navy Nuclear Power School or Bettis Reactor Engineering School
Excellent written and oral communication skills
3+ years of work experience in nuclear industry
Prior qualification as an NCS engineer at a DOE or NRC regulated facility
Experience with MCNP and/or KENO
Proficiency with a computing language such as Python
Security clearance
Additional Requirements The minimum education and experience for the lowest career level are listed in the Minimum Job Requirements. Higher career levels require meeting the corresponding job leveling charts. A DOE Q clearance is required or obtainable, and the ability to obtain/maintain it is a condition of employment.
This position may require entry into Material Access Areas (MAA) and participation in the Human Reliability Program (10 CFR Part 712), including possible counterintelligence evaluation and polygraph examination. It may also be categorized as a “designated position” under 10 CFR Part 709 with related evaluations.
