Overview:
We seek a qualified Mechanical Engineer to assist in designing custom automation equipment tailored to our clients’ needs. The ideal candidate will be capable of conducting clean slate industrial design independently or as part of a collaborative team. Our systems cater to various industries and integrate various technologies, providing a dynamic and challenging work environment.
Responsibilities:
- Utilize SolidWorks software to create CAD models for mechanical components and assemblies per Jewett Automation’s design standards.
- Research and specify commercially off-the-shelf components for use in automation system designs
- Collaborate with project team members to strategically execute project scope.
- Develop and
- Assist Sales and Applications departments to accurately estimate the material costs and labor for proposed equipment.
- Create detailed manufacturing drawings with accurate dimensions and tolerances.
- Select appropriate materials for machined and fabricated components.
- Assist Operations with the manufacture of Engineered systems.
- Troubleshoot automation systems during the debug phase of projects.
- Perform finite element analyses as required.
- Collaborate with Electrical and Controls Engineers to ensure machine designs meet requirements.
- Provide technical support to the Service department and customers.
- Create documentation for piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&ID) for projects.
- Document as-built conditions.
- Develop machine documentation.
- Perform all assigned tasks within a predefined amount of time, while following quality limits and safety practices.
- Conduct quality control checks to ensure products align with company and client standards.
- Participate in scheduled departmental and project meetings.
- Collaborate with colleagues to create cohesive and effective products.
- Identify and suggest productivity and quality improvements to supervisors and engineers.
Key Skills/Attributes:
- Strong understanding of standard machine elements (bearings, gearboxes, timing belts, mechanical indexers, etc.).
- Willingness to travel occasionally.
- Years of relevant work experience can substitute for a degree or certificate. A bachelor’s degree in engineering is preferred but not required.
- 5+ Years of experience in machine design. Automation machinery preferred.
- Strong command of SolidWorks 3D CAD software.
- Experience with 3D printing manufacturing methods.
- Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Familiarity with manufacturing methods for mechanical components and fabrications.
- Working knowledge of standard power tools and mechanical hand tools.
- Ability to read electrical and mechanical prints and schematics.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, multi-tasking, cross-functional environment.
- Ability to adhere to safety standards.
- Strong math abilities.
- Written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to utilize basic computer applications such as email, Teams, and Windows.
- Ability to navigate Microsoft software applications (OUTLOOK, EXCEL, WORD, TEAMS)

Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift at least 50-75 lbs.
- Ability to stand and/or sit a minimum of four hours at a time.
- Ability to use hands and arms to finger, handle, reach, and feel.
- Ability to work on a computer as needed.
- Ability to maneuver around a shop environment and work on complex machines, including but not limited to, climbing and working from ladders and lifts.
- Ability to travel approximately one week at a time throughout the year.
- Willingness to wear PPE for the work environment.
