Network Development Engineer At Project Kuiper

Project Kuiper is Amazon's low Earth orbit satellite broadband network. Its mission is to deliver fast, reliable internet to customers and communities around the world. As a Network Development Engineer at Project Kuiper, you will lead the implementation, maintenance, and optimization of mission-critical enterprise networks supporting our manufacturing facilities, research labs, launch sites, and mission operations centers worldwide. You will ensure high availability, performance, and security of network infrastructure across multiple global locations.

Key job responsibilities include:

  • Deployment and ongoing maintenance of complex network solutions in manufacturing and lab environments
  • Ensuring robust network operations supporting launch and mission activities
  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex routing, interconnectivity, and performance issues
  • Implementing and managing change control processes for network modifications
  • Developing and maintaining operational procedures and technical documentation
  • Leading capacity planning and performance optimization initiatives
  • Enhancing and managing monitoring and alerting systems for proactive issue detection
  • Mentoring junior engineers on operational best practices and troubleshooting techniques
  • Driving automation initiatives to streamline repetitive tasks and improve efficiency
  • Participating in 24/7 on-call rotation for critical infrastructure support
  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure network reliability for mission-critical operations

A day in the life involves reviewing network monitoring alerts across manufacturing facilities and mission operations centers, analyzing traffic patterns and capacity needs for the factory floor while planning network expansion for new lab spaces, participating in the deployment of network solutions for upcoming launch sites, contract manufacturing partners, and testing facilities, coordinating with vendors on WAN circuit installations, troubleshooting routing issues affecting production systems, and mentoring team members on complex network deployments. You will also participate in change management meetings, schedule maintenance windows, and document network modifications. Throughout the day, you'll handle escalations from manufacturing teams, validate network security controls, and ensure high availability across all sites.

The role requires balancing immediate operational needs with strategic planning and improvement of processes and procedures to maintain network reliability for mission-critical operations. This is an on-site role that requires employees to work from the company's office 5 days per week. Remote work is not an option for this position. The role will include up to 25% of business travel.

Basic qualifications include:

  • 4+ years of major internet routing protocols experience
  • 4+ years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience
  • 1+ years of automation scripting using Python, Bash, Shell and/or Perl experience

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Experience with AWS and AWS networking products such as Direct Connect and Transit Gateway
