The energy industry, particularly transmission grids, is undergoing major changes to accommodate for regional and global demand growth, decarbonization and energy transition targets. Underground and subsea cable technology are, in particular, increasingly becoming a major player in this energy paradigm shift to enable large-scale and long-distance power transmission.

As an HV Underground Transmission Engineer, you will work closely with regional and global transmission and cable experts within Jacobs to support and/or lead ongoing projects as well as business development and proposal support with a variety of clients including renewable developers, transmission owner/developers as well as utilities.

The successful candidate shall demonstrate related experience and technical knowledge in the field of underground transmission, cable engineering design and installation, with emphasis on high voltage applications (69kV and above), through experience with consulting engineering firms, developers and/or direct exposure to OEMs. Knowledge of electrical design/studies, functional/technical specifications, and/or FAT/SAT commissioning related to cable systems is preferred.

Duties for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Develop HV/EHV cabling systems specifications, concept/detailed design and design review, estimation, site supervision and support as required.
  • Provide technical support to the team on all aspects of HV cable system engineering and design.
  • Prepare specifications power cable route specifications, and reports and progress reports.
  • Confirm correct and accurate interface with other engineering functions involved in the projects,
  • Attend and conduct internal and external meetings with colleagues, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Support factory inspections Test (FAT).
  • Perform technical calculations including cable size, rating calculations, electromechanical and thermomechanical forces and EMF calculations, heath induced voltage calculations.
  • Perform design reviews, and verification of design.
  • Confirm that the drawings and specification documents contain sufficient, accurate information for construction of the works. Formally request any missing information in sufficient time to allow the program to proceed without delay.
  • Confirm that inspection and test plans are completed as required by the specifications, including a check of dimension accuracy and quality.

Here's what you'll need:

Bachelors degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical or related engineering discipline, from a recognized institution. Master's degree is preferred.

Minimum 8 years of direct experience with underground and/or subsea cable design and installation.

Ability to work with cable design software such as CYMCAP.

Knowledge of applicable industry standards such as IEC, IEEE and CIGRE.

Experience working with major global cable OEMs.

Ability and willingness to travel within North America.

Ideally, you'll also have:

Experience with HVDC and subsea cable technologies.

Professional Engineer (PE or PEng) License or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Active/ongoing involvement in power cable related working groups and standards committees such as ICC or CIGRE.

Posted Salary Range: Minimum $129,400.00 to $180,000.00.
